Description
The responsibility of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Officer is to receive, process and respond to FOIA requests for public records, ensuring timely, accurate and legally compliant responses. This position will handle the review of documents, communication with requesters, and collaboration with other departments to facilitate the appropriate release of information in support of transparency, accountability and compliance with public information access laws.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications, public administration, records management, or a related field and three (3) to five (5) years of related FOIA, compliance and communications experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Thorough understanding of FOIA regulations to include the applicable definitions, time limits, requirements, exemptions and penalties.
Thorough understanding of and familiarity with public records and public information access laws, to include the Virginia Public Records Act and Library of Virginia’s Records Retention Schedules.
Excellent organizational skills, oral and written communication skills, and proficiency to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
Experience with FOIA requests, responses and legal and policy compliance.
Supplemental Information
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Physical Demands
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including automated office equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Physical demand requirements are those for light to moderate walking on varied surfaces.
