What are the responsibilities and job description for the Auditor position at York County?
Responsible for performing professional work conducting financial and compliance audit examinations of businesses operating within the County jurisdiction to ensure proper application and enforcement of County tax ordinances. Ensures compliance with all regulations regarding financial reporting of businesses related to business and professional licenses, business tangible personal property, machinery and tools, consumer, and other related taxes. Meets with, responds to, and contacts the general public, attorneys, professionals, and other parties. Researches State law, Tax Commissioner and Attorney General Opinions in order to determine all applicable taxes for which the business is liable. Prepares complex tax specific reports for internal and external parties. Performs detailed analysis of tax records to assist in identifying revenue sources or inequities, and in projecting revenue for the County. Responsible for Cigarette Tax compliance. Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, auditing, business administration, or related field, and two (2) to four (4) years of experience in accounting or auditing, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Performs complex financial and compliance audit examinations to ensure proper application and enforcement of applicable laws and regulations; identifies the scope of the audit, creates a plan, audits and reviews federal and state tax returns, depreciation schedules, and profit and loss statements in order to ensure an accurate accounting of gross receipts and capital assets; obtains, analyzes, and presents resulting data in order to effectively convey findings and implications.
Works closely with various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials to provide information on various types of court cases and actions; confers periodically with the Department of Taxation concerning business compliance with sales tax, and to coordinate audit procedures.
Reconciles revenue received through state distribution reports, and maintains current statistics. Compiles detailed financial data from a variety of sources for periodic reports to various departments and state agencies.Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including automated office equipment such as computerized data entry equipment, printers, calculators, copiers, scanners, etc. The work is primarily sedentary in nature. However, there is some standing, some walking, and some bending and stooping involved.
