What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Assistant (Youth Services) (Part-time) position at York County?
Responsible for providing assistance with children and teen library programs in addition to providing technical and reference assistance to children, parents, teachers, and other patrons. Assists in scheduling, planning, and presenting Youth Services programs for infant, toddler, pre-school, school-aged, and teen library patrons. Assists in planning publicizing and conducting story times, Summer Reading Program, Battle of the Books and other reading promotions. Position will work at both Tabb and Yorktown Libraries. Incumbents work 20 hours per week and shifts may include days, some nights and weekend hours. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to Bachelor's degree. Experience working with children in libraries or schools preferred.
Requires knowledge of basic library procedures, methods and techniques.
Must have general knowledge of children's books and authors and be familiar with resource and reference materials, particularly those pertaining to youth.
Personal computer experience using Microsoft Office Suite and the Internet necessary.
Must have good communication skills and have the ability to exercise tact and courtesy when interacting with the public in person and over the phone.
Requires an acceptable criminal background check.Must be able to work a continual floating schedule as needed.
Must be able to work nights and weekends when required.
Criminal background check conducted prior to employment.Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including office equipment such as computers, calculators, copiers, facsimile machines, microfiche machines, etc. Work involves some lifting of boxes of books and/or periodicals, and pushing, and pulling of a handcart or other type of cart. Must be physically able to set up rooms for programs, including lifting and stacking of chairs and equipment and pushing and setting up heavy tables.
