What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Real Estate Appraiser position at York County?
Responsible for appraising real estate located in York County for the purpose of generating accurate and equitable real estate assessments, based on fair market data, for ad valorem purposes. County Appraisers are responsible for a geographic area of approximately 6,700 parcels including taxable and exempt properties. Appraisers are required to list and value land, residential, commercial, and industrial structures, observe and record property characteristics in a computer assisted mass appraisal program. Appraisers must be able to analyze objective data, and utilize market data in order to identify and reflect market trends. Good communication skills and diplomacy are essential when interacting with property owners, real estate professionals, builders, attorneys, and other local and state officials. Senior Real Estate Appraisers serve as the County’s real estate experts, and assist local, state, and federal agencies with real estate related informational needs.Bachelor's degree in real estate, finance, or a related field, and 5 years of experience in real property appraisal; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Requires thorough knowledge of real estate principles and practices, and of the cost, income, and market methods of appraising property.
Thorough knowledge of word processing, data base, and spreadsheet software. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with property owners, County officials, and other internal and external contacts.
Possession of a Commonwealth of Virginia Real Estate Appraisal License (Certified General Real Estate license, Certified Residential license, or Licensed Real Appraisal license).
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with good driving record.DMV records check will be conducted prior to employment.
This position is considered an Essential Position (County designation as ALPHA) which requires the employee to report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions, often outside normally scheduled work hours, or as notified by a supervisor.Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including an automobile, tape measures, camera, engineer’s scale, and office equipment, etc. Work is more physically demanding than typical office jobs. Requires frequent walking and standing while performing appraisal work. Bending and stooping occurs while taking measurements, and there is climbing of stairs, or to reach portions of parcels that are on property with a steep grade. There may be some limited crawling to observe structural items. Carrying of a number of light weight objects (such as tape measure, camera, clipboard, writing tools, measuring wheel, and a cellular phone) occurs while doing appraisals. Reaching over one’s head is sometimes needed to clear obstacles when measuring a structure.
