What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Recreation Camp Counselor position at York County?
Responsible for assisting with the implementation of a recreation camp program for school-age children (kindergarten through 12th grade) with special needs. Makes recommendations for program adaptations to meet the needs of children with special medical conditions, dietary concerns, and/or behavioral problems. Assists with planning, promoting, organizing and implementing daily activities, special events, field trips, etc. Leads a variety of small and large group activities each week and adapts programs to include all campers. Provides guidance to the children in areas of personal care and behavioral issues and ensures safety standards are met at all times.
Camp runs for 4 weeks from June 23rd through July 18th . Hours of work are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.
Must be 18 years of age or older.Current enrollment or graduation from a college or university degree program in Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation or related field preferred; or any equivalent combination of or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Requires 1 to 2 years of experience working with children; work experience with special needs children preferred.
Requires excellent communication and leadership skills.
Must exercise considerable tact and courtesy when interacting with program participants, parents and support staff.
Requires an acceptable criminal background check.A consistent and reliable attendance record throughout the 4-week program is required.
Must be available to work a revised schedule when needed.
Criminal background check conducted prior to employment.Must be physically able to operate common office equipment such as personal computers, typewriters, copiers, calculators, etc. Work will involve both sitting and standing. Requires regular and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical task such as walking/running over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, kneeling, leaping, jumping down, standing in place or continual walking, lifting and carrying of moderate to heavy items (including people) on a consistent basis. There is occasional lifting of boxes, usually nothing weighing any more than 15-20 pounds.
