What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Development position at York Literacy Institute?
Responsibilities: York Literacy Institute’s (YLI) Director of Development has responsibility for fundraising and development activities for the organization, including grant writing, Give Local York campaign, Literacy Empowerment Campaign and the annual fall event, Heroes & Villains.
Comprehensive management skills and experience are required, including but not limited to excellent oral and written communication skills, short and long-term fund development planning, program evaluation, marketing, and directing and motivating staff and volunteers. Successful candidate will demonstrate experience with the management and implementation of a comprehensive fund development program for charitable contributions.
Duties:
1. Develop, plan, and execute a comprehensive development program which will financially support the organization’s mission and growth.
2. Donor Engagement - develop a compelling case for support and establish relationships with YLI donors and prospective donors.
3. Fund Development Activities - Organize, coordinate, and direct fundraising events, research and write grant proposals (public and private) and compile, analyze, maintain, and report on trends in the annual giving campaign (LEC). Identify opportunities and challenges and develop strategies to ensure goals are met.
4. Volunteer Engagement and Support - Empower and support volunteers in the fundraising process and related activities to expand organizational capacity.
5. Communications - In cooperation with the Community Relations Manager, create and disseminate public communications, including via social media, newsletters and emails to ensure an ongoing, lively, and timely community presence.
6. Accountability & Compliance - Comply with all reporting requirements and regulations to fulfill commitment to accountability and demonstrate transparency.
7. Database oversight – ensure CRM database is being utilized correctly, data is accurate, and new information is being input.
8. Event Management – plan and execute annual fundraising events, such as Heroes & Villains, including sponsorships, logistics, and volunteer and staff engagement.
9. Grant management – work with grants assistant to identify grant opportunities to apply for, develop applications, manage staff understanding of deliverables, and report results.
10. Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet the demands of fund development activities and to plan and meet deadlines.
11. Demonstrate initiative and work as a team player.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience in development.
2. Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills.
3. Possesses an understanding of philanthropy and use of sophisticated solicitation strategies for engaging donors and negotiating major gifts.
4. Must convey a professional and positive image and attitude regarding the organization and the not-for-profit sector.
5. Demonstrated ability to create infrastructure, document activities, and define roles.
6. Knowledge and experience in the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivation for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques, proposal and grants writing, special events, telephone solicitation and direct mail, and development office functions, including experience with CRM database, gift processing, research of prospect and donor histories, and financial tracking and reporting.
7. Experience with computer systems, including Office 365 Microsoft and CRM database is necessary.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Flexible schedule which can include evening, and weekend hours, a valid driver’s license and own transportation is necessary. Work environment is a normal office environment except when traveling. Lifting and carrying up to 30#, periods of walking, standing, use of arms and hands may be necessary at various events.
