ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Senior Project Manager/Project Manager, is responsible for carrying out the design and preparation of contract drawings, tenders, specifications, documents and estimates for traffic control signals, miscellaneous traffic control devices, illumination, pavement markings and permanent roadway signage.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
• Designs traffic control signals, miscellaneous traffic control devices, illumination, pavement markings, and permanent roadway signage including the preparation of contract drawings, tenders, specifications, and documents.
• Reviews and provides comments on traffic control signal, illumination designs, pavement markings and permanent roadway signage, designs, tenders, specifications, and documents prepared by consultants and reviews/prepares cost sharing schedules.
• Prepares legal drawings for traffic control signals; plots original drawings ready for assembling contracts.
• Visits proposed project sites to photograph existing traffic signal and illumination equipment and to determine on site design constraints; meets with appropriate internal staff or external contractors to locate and tie in buried plan when plans indicate no existing electrical plants are available; visits construction sites when required, to ensure there are no on-site conflicts between proposed plants and existing utilities.
• Requests stakeout of proposed traffic control signal equipment; goes on site and stakes out poles, hand wells and/or signs on smaller installations, as required.
• Analyses data obtained by Traffic Data Collectors to determine design requirements.
• Maintains database for traffic signals, illumination, and related infrastructure.
• Liaises with Project Managers and branch staff, to coordinate electrical and traffic design for Branch projects.
• Responds to enquiries and resolves concerns, as appropriate, from the public, area municipalities, and provincial officials.
• Assigns work to the other staff when necessary.
• Performs other duties as assigned to meet Branch and Department objectives.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
• Successful completion of a three (3) year Community College Diploma Program in Electrical, Civil or Traffic Engineering Technology.
• Minimum three (3) years experience in traffic control signal, illumination, pavement marking and permanent roadway signing design.
• Significant demonstrated experience in municipal highway or traffic design drafting using AutoCAD and relevant mechanical and technological equipment.
• Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and reliable vehicle for use on corporate business.
• Sound knowledge of theory, principles and practices of transportation planning and traffic engineering and Ministry traffic policies and procedures such as traffic signing, traffic control, control signal policies and capacity.
• Knowledge of fundamental aspects of road design, surveying, and survey applications.
• Familiarity with relevant legislation and regulations including the Highway Traffic Act, Ontario Traffic Control Devices Manual, Roadside Safety Manual, Ontario Provincial Standards Drawing Manuals, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regional standards regarding traffic control signal, illumination and pavement marking design.
• Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications as well as proficiency in AutoCAD and with the application of specialized software relevant to the technical specialty.
• Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including communication, innovation, teamwork and collaboration, and personal ownership.
• Proficiency in mathematical calculations and analysis.
• Ability to direct consultants on technical issues.
• Ability to work outside regular business hours as required.
