York Space Systems is looking for an Electro-Optical (EO) Engineer with 3-8 years of experience.
York EO Engineers work closely with our technology partners for detailed assessment of optical link budgets, optical system performance, and cross-vendor interoperability. The ideal candidate looks forward to being a leader for applied optical physics both internally and externally to the organization across an entire program lifecycle.
As an EO engineer at York, you will experience the full EO system life cycle from proposal to on-orbit commissioning, with a mixture of hands-on hardware activities and at the desk analysis activities, directly contributing to making on-orbit optical links.
This is a systems integrator role that is vendor and customer facing, not a design role.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own optical communications link budgets and analysis of electro-optical payload performance
- Support test execution and troubleshooting involving electro-optical payloads utilizing optical test equipment
- Perform trade studies on electro-optical payload capabilities to meet customer requirements.
- Support cross-vendor interoperability assessments and troubleshooting
- Support MRB, FRB, etc. as an Optical Physics SME
- Facilitate partner optical system verification and integration for York spacecraft.
- Determine optical payload specifications in accordance with spacecraft designs, customer requirements, optical analysis, and industry standards.
- Fulfill the role of optical physics SME within engineering, to the customer and with our supplier community.
- Support on-orbit optical payload testing and operations through the development of operational procedures.
- Support major milestone reviews such as PDR, CDR, etc.
- Understand & promote electro-optical payload & fiber optic cable best-handling practices
- Will require some travel to support testing and launch.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or related field.
- Prior experience with development and test of precision electro-optical systems.
- Prior experience owning and creating optical communication link budgets and other similar analytical artifacts
- Intimate understanding of optical physics and how it applies to electro-optical payloads
- Familiarity with optical/lidar signal processing techniques.
- Basic ability to script (Python, MATLAB, etc.) and work with version control systems (Git)
- Knowledge of basic communications theory principles
- Knowledge of basic optical test equipment (power meters, spectrum analyzers, etc.)
- Ability to perform under a deadline, accountable and self-driven.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Organized and a decent multitasker across multiple projects.
- Detail orientated and data driven.
- Must have, or a willingness to obtain, a DoD Security Clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants meeting one or more of the below criteria are preferred.
- Master's Degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Familiarity with optical message framing, coding, error correction, etc.
- Experience with the environments experienced by a spacecraft and their implications to precision optical systems.
- Experience in the design, development, and/or testing of electro-optical payloads (e.g. lasers, optical comm, lidar) for space.
- Background in electronics or networking
- Active DoD Security Clearance
