Purpose Statement

The Health Services Coordinator ensures that all Yorkville CUSD 115 health initiatives, services, and programs are aligned with federal and state laws, regulations, and best practices. As part of this leadership role, the Health Services Coordinator: Performs functions to coordinate school health services including continued maintenance of health services policies for students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, district/state board of education policies and procedures and Illinois State law regarding nurse practice.

Supervises: Building Nurse Staff

Work Year: Nurse & RN Calendar 183 Days

Essential Functions

The following statements of duties, responsibilities, frequency, and percentages are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.   • Develops and maintains a coordinated school health program including but not limited to standardizing plans of care, parent correspondence, and professional nursing care.
  • Resource for nurses and administrators regarding school health and wellness policies and procedures.
  • Create and maintain schedules for healthcare coverage throughout the district.
  • Participates on the concussion protocol committee.
  • Assesses the health and safety needs of the school environment in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, implementing the Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan and other interventions as indicated.
  • Establishes and maintains communicable disease prevention and control program in cooperation with local and state public health agencies.
  • Assists in managing school health records in accordance with Illinois School Student Records Act, providing efficient retrieval of information and other related archival responsibilities.
  • Organizes and implements inservice activities for school nurses and health assistants.
  • Inservice nurses regarding policies for direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff including nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation
  • Serves on various team committees such as crisis team, wellness team, and curriculum team.
  • Assists in maintaining a user friendly and organized health services office conducive to confidential communication and services
  • Maintains communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students
  • Responsible for health related data collection and State reports
  • Participates as a member of professional school nursing and education organizations and utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields
  • Participates as a member of the faculty on district committees and association activities
  • Participates as an active member of the school community, representing health/wellness
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrading skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: planning and managing projects; using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records, effectively/appropriately maintaining relationships with staff and parents, assessing and assisting in planning professional development for staff members, presenting to parents and constituents regarding Special Education programming.

Knowledge is required to perform math; review, highly nuanced summaries of evaluations for individual subgroups, at-risk groups, and school-wide, present and implement desired actions; evaluate staff actions and provide support towards desired growth for certified and noncertified staff members. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactory perform the functions of the job to include: ethical roles of profession, implications of systems theory, the evaluation process, the Danielson model, student growth, child/adolescent development, and ethical and legal compliance provided by Illinois State Code, IDEA and other relevant pieces of legislation.

Ability is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or categorize data, and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a variety of circumstances; analyze student, staff member, and sociological data, relate and effectively deal with diversity of students/staff/families, assist in the professional development/growth, and provide consultation to staff members and principals regarding student needs and appropriate interventions. Independently and collectively problem-solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on familial, school-wide, classroom-wide, student-specific needs/objectives. Specific skill sets necessary include: effectively listening to the needs of others, communicating appropriately, adapting to changing work priorities, dealing with frequent and sustained interruptions, developing and maintaining positive working relationships, facilitating communication between school and home, implementing change, maintaining confidentiality, conflict resolution, understanding student learning and disability function, meeting legal deadlines and schedules, providing leadership on the student services team, evaluating student/family/school/classroom needs, developing, monitoring, and assessing interventions, analyzing and reporting on student/family/school/classroom.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; managing major organizational components; and supervising the use of funds for multiple departments. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is routinely required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary method of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: walking, pushing, carrying, and pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting 35% walking, 15% standing.

Experience: Experience developing care plans for students with medical needs. Excellent communication skills with students, teachers, parents, and administration

Education: Requirements necessary for state certification.
