SCHOOL NURSE
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Administrator of Special Education, the School Nurse will provide health services for the evaluation, improvement, and protection of the health of Yosemite Unified students and school personnel in accordance with legal requirements of the State of California. The major focus of school health services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The School Nurse will oversee all school site Health Aides.
DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Conduct immunization programs pursuant to Section 49403 and assure that every pupil’s immunization status is in compliance with the law, including parental or guardian consent, and good health practice;
- Assess and evaluate the health and development status of pupils to identify specific physical disorders and other factors relating to the learning process, communicate with the primary care provider, and contributes significant information in order to modify the pupils’ educational plans;
- Interpret the health and developmental assessment to parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals directly concerned with the pupil;
- Provide training for school site Health Aides and delineate their duties;
- Design and implement a health maintenance plan to meet the individual health needs of students, incorporating plans directed by a physician;
- Refer the pupil and his/her parent or guardian to appropriate community resources for necessary services;
- Maintain communication with parents and all involved community practitioners and agencies to promote needed treatment and secure reports of findings pertinent to educational planning;
- Interpret medical and nursing findings appropriate to the student’s individual learning plan and make recommendations to professional personnel directly involved;
- Council pupils and parents by assisting children and youth, parents, and school personnel in identifying and utilizing appropriate and mutually acceptable private and community health delivery services for professional care and remediation of defects;
- Council with parent’s, pupils, and school staff regarding health-related attendance problems;
- Serve as a resource person to school personnel, including conducting in-service education;
- Prevent and control outbreaks of infectious disease through inspections, exclusions, and re-admissions;
- Attend IEP meetings;
- Serve on Special Education team;
- Maintain and improve professional competence through continuing education and participation in activities for professional growth;
- Help parents, school personnel and pupils understand and adjust to physical, mental and social limitations
- Assist parents and pupils to solve financial, transportation and other barriers to needed health services; and
- Perform other related duties as needed.

Knowledge and skills of:

- Accurate record-keeping methods and practices;

- Applicable sections of State Education Code and other applicable laws;
- Operation of a computer and data entry techniques;
- Reading and writing communication skills;

- Emergency/disaster practices; and
- District organization, operations, policies and objectives.

Education/
Experience: Registered Nurse currently licensed under Chapter 6 (commencing with Section 2700) of Division 2 of the Business and Professions Code, and who has completed the additional requirements for, and possesses a current credential in, school nursing pursuant to Section 44877 or is currently enrolled in a university waiver program to gain the school nurse credential.
Five years of nursing experience
