The mission of Young Horizons Child Development Centers is to provide quality childcare and preschool programs to families in Long Beach in a caring, loving, and learning environment. Young Horizons is a nonprofit organization serving children of low-income families since 1969. The Child Development Services provided are: Infant / Toddler Program, Preschool full-day and half-day programs, and a nutritious Food Program.

ASSISTANT TEACHER - JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for providing a safe and developmentally appropriate program in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures. The assistant teacher supports the teacher in implementing the curriculum, supports work with parents, and participates in the assessment of the needs of individual children. The Assistant Teacher reports to the Teacher daily and Site Supervisor as needed.

This is an on-call, as needed position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Current and valid Assistant Teacher Permit or higher.

High School Diploma or Equivalent

6 units of Early Childhood Education: 3 units in Child Development or Human Development and 3 units in Child, Family and Community or Child; 3 additional units in Infant Care and/or Toddler Development with PITC knowledge and experience if working with infants and/or toddlers.

A minimum of 6 months experience working with children ages 6 months through 5 years

Requirements

Proof of health and immunization clearance - MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella), Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis, TB (Tuberculosis) and Flu (Influenza) shot or a waiver of the flu shot.

Livescan Background and Child Abuse Index Check Professional reference and employment history checks.

Pediatric CPR/First Aid

Trainings: Pesticide Management, Child Abuse Mandated Reporter, ServSafe (required for staff serving meals).

Must speak English and be able to teach the English language.

Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required.

Use the telephone to speak and listen. The employee is frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, jump, run, dance, taste and smell. Employee must get down to child’s eye level, sit, bend, squat and twist. Must be able to visually supervise and maneuver around the classroom. Must be able to carry, lift, push and pull up to 30lbs and on occasion may team lift/push or pull up to 50 pounds. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth and perception, and the ability to adjust and focus. Direct visual supervision of staff, volunteers, and children required. Employees go outside daily, if weather permits. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be noisy and chaotic. Noise levels may change intermittently.
