What are the responsibilities and job description for the Livestrong Coach position at YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL KENTUCKY INC?
GENERAL FUNCTION:
Under the direction and supervision of the branch LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Coordinator and the Director of Health Initiatives, the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Coach will be responsible for providing quality leadership and facilitation in LIVESTRONG at the YMCA classes, while maintaining a supportive environment for participants through communication to participants in and out of group sessions.
Candidate should be available to participate in two days of training, and Tuesday and Thursdays 6-8pm for regular program sessions.
KNOW HOW:
Must have excellent communication and listening skills. This position requires the ability and desire to work with the diverse needs of both the active and inactive/unfit populations. This individual must provide positive feedback, motivation and encouragement to help the members feel successful.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification
- A degree in Exercise Science or related field (Wellness Specialist) preferred
- LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Coaching Certification
- Must have general knowledge of exercise physiology, anatomy and kinesiology
- Must enjoy working with people and have excellent human relations skills
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate LIVESTRONG at the YMCA classes in accordance with established guidelines
- Lead small groups of adult cancer survivors and take responsibility for group dynamics and interactions among members
- Keeps attendance and completes associated paperwork following each session
- Must be exceptional listener and engage in active listening with participants
- Must be able to express empathy to participants
- Has a detailed knowledge of health behavior and the difficulties associated with making a lifestyle change
- Has a detailed knowledge of cancer including common treatments and side effects as it relates to exercise and required modifications
- Appropriately provide and implement sessions in accordance with National and State standards and guidelines
- Deliver the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA curriculum as set forward by YMCA of the YUSA
- Report accidents and injuries as well as complete incident reports
- Set up and break down equipment as needed
- Encourage group participation and interaction through the use of open-ended questions and facilitate commitment and retention of participants
- Foster relationships with and between participants
- Be accessible to participants both before and after sessions to answer questions and follow-up on any questions you cannot answer during class time.
- Arrive for class on time and dressed appropriately.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear; use hands to fingers, handle or feel, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, peripheral, depth, and ability to adjust.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participants will have a sense of belonging to the YMCA through the relationships built with the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA coaching staff. Participants will reach a higher level of wellness and wholeness (spirit, mind, and body) through the LIVESTRONG program and support conducted by the coaching staff. Participants, regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status, or fitness level will feel supported and motivated to adhere to long-term participation in YMCA programs.
