What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp - Assistant Director position at YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL KENTUCKY INC?
General Function: Responsible for the overall operation of a camp site including management, safety of children, planning and implementing appropriate lesson plans, building positive parent and host relationships. Responsible for the direct supervision of the site staff and their activities. Work with staff to provide a program which will foster children’s social, physical, spiritual, and mental growth.

Summer Camp Schedule: Candidates must be available to work the following dates (some exceptions may apply including pre-approved absences):
- Camp training: May 29th, mandatory
- Camp weeks: June 2 through August 8th, Monday through Friday
- Camp hours: 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., shifts are typically 4-8 hours in length
Principle Activities:
- Using the appropriate YMCA curriculum, planning activities that take into consideration the needs of each child and the goals and objectives of the YMCA
- Being responsible for the safety of the children at all times
- Planning daily/weekly/monthly lesson plans, and assisting the staff in their implementation
- Being responsible for daily record keeping and adherence to all requirements
- Supervising staff in all areas following all YMCA policies
- Attending all staff meetings and training as required by the YMCA and state licensing.
- Overseeing the daily maintenance of the space and facility
- Attending and/or conducting parent conferences if needed
- Planning and implementation of family activities
- Attend/work the school’s open house at the start of the school year and at least one additional school function.
- Maintaining positive relationships and open communication with other staff, parents, children and school/host personnel
- Control and maintain supplies and inventory
- Responsible for meeting the individual needs of all children at the site
- Know and follow all YMCA emergency procedures
- Follow all procedures for collection of fees, maintaining accounts, and maintaining and submitting all financial paperwork
- Must maintain state licensing standards and work with state licensing inspectors
- Must keep individual participant files complete and up to date
- Must keep staff files complete and up to date
- Must organize and plan programs on all schools’ days out, and report to work as assigned ensuring all policies and procedures for YMCA School Age Child Care programs are followed.
- Prepare and post monthly snack calendar following all YMCA and state licensing requirements.
- Shop for snack and other supplies working within budget.
- Publish a weekly newsletter for parents.
- Follow all procedures/policies presented in the Site Directors Notebook and Site Director training.
- Participate in association events as assigned.
- Develop and lead a Campaign for Kids fundraising campaign at site and as assigned by supervisor.
- Assume other duties as directed by YMCA administration
Essential Functions:
- Must be able to visually supervise the children
- Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in such a way as to be easily understood by children, staff and parents
- Must be able to move freely and quickly through the building and outside
- Must be able to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications
- Must be able to remain alert while on duty
- Must be able to comprehend state licensing rules and regulations and implement them daily
- Basic record keeping
- Basic mathematical skills with speed and accuracy
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds 3 feet off the ground
Entry Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must have a high school diploma, two years of previous experience with children and some college education
- Must meet the state licensing requirements for a director of a child care center
- Must have the ability to work well with children in cooperation with other staff, and parents
- Must build strong relationships with school administrators and faculty
- Must be able to perform essential functions as listed
Job Requirements:
- Must maintain a current TB test
- Must maintain current CPR and First Aid certifications
- Must understand the needs of and be able to effectively care for children ages 5-14
- Must have the ability to work well with children in cooperation with staff, and parents of participants
- Must have strong communication skills, practical and strong decision making skills, versatility, initiative, and strong human relation skills
- Must be able to supervise staff
- Must learn and maintain state licensing rules as they apply to the program
- Must attend required YMCA and state licensing training within allotted time
- Must be able to perform essential functions as listed.
