This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. the Group EX Instructor is responsible for leading both beginning and experienced exercises in safe and effective group classes. The goal of this program is to assist members in making a healthy lifestyle change, to build self-esteem, and to encourage consistency. The role of the Group Exercise Instructor is to assist and inspire members as they participate in Group Exercise classes. The Group EX Instructor is expected to demonstrate a professional manner at all times when in the facility, including personal time spent in the facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
2. Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living.
3. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
4. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
5. Regularly checks all equipment to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness.
6. Keeps accurate class attendance records.
7. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
8. Abides by the safety, injury and illness, and prevention guidelines by taking personal responsibility for own safety and safety of program participants.

Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, members, and participants to create a culture of service within our Centers.
- Extensive knowledge in the health and wellness field in high volume settings and a proven leader with the ability to develop relationships and encourage relationship development.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, versatility, and independent thinking.
- Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs, as well as the ability to use most office equipment is required.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma required, Degree in Exercise Science or related field preferred.
- Nationally recognized certifications required.
- 1-2 years managing wellness programs preferred.
Certifications Required:
- Must have specific knowledge of exercise training in regard to the classes that are taught.
- Current Adult CPR and AED certification.
- A national recognized fitness certification (ACE, AFAA, etc. and/or a nationally recognized personal trainer certification (ACSM, NSCA, ACE, AFAA, etc.)
- Within 30 days of hire completion of: Adult CPR; AED; First Ai
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up-to 50 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
Essential Functions:
- Work with the Health and Wellness Director to develop the needs of the Group Exercise Program
- Find appropriate substitute coverage and substitute for other Group Exercise Instructors as needed.
- Create a positive working environment which encourages and motivates others to become more involved in the YMCA.
- Maintain and evaluate the current Group Exercise equipment, reporting the needs of the program to the Health and Wellness Director
- Plan and implement new classes, employing latest music and choreography to maintain member interest.
- Demonstrate proper form/technique and verbally cue members; correct form is necessary.
- Set-up, store, and secure equipment upon completion of class
- The Group EX Instructor will maintain their certifications and stay current with exercise techniques.
- Attend meetings when requested.
- Participate in fundraising event.
