POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Swim School Coordinator is responsible for the effective teaching and completion of all swim school programs in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills and creatively finds ways to connect them to one another and the Y community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Swim School Coordinator
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
- Grows the Swim School program both in group lessons and private lessons.
- Is a liaison between swim school participants/families and the Aquatics Director.
- Welcomes and provides an orientation for new swimmers and their parents.
- Maintains a safe and productive environment for lessons.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
- Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Manages and maintains swim school equipment and supplies. Reports damaged equipment.
- Conducts in-service trainings for swim instructors.
- Completes other administrative functions needed by the aquatics director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age of 18
- Swim instructor experience required
- Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
- Current Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent is a plus
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification within 30 days
- Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
HOURS: 30 - 40 hours/week
The hours would include administrative hours and pool deck hours.

- Physically perform all skills required of a swim instructor.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
- Ability to perform essential functions which may involve, but not limited to the following activities: standing; sitting; semi-to-full reaching overhead; crouching; kneeling; carrying; twisting of the waist, shoulders and legs.
