What are the responsibilities and job description for the St. Micheal's Family YMCA Lead Program Staff position at Young Men's Christian Association of the Chesapeake, Inc?
POSITION SUMMARY:
Work with the Executive Director to plan, organize and implement the Day Camp program at St. Michaels Family YMCA. Ensure the safety, well-being and personal growth of staff and campers. Responsible for overall Day Camp operation: tone-setting, communication with parents, camper behavior management, scheduling, quality of activities, staff evaluations and coordination of transportation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Incorporate and model
our YMCA Christian principles of caring, honesty, respect, and
responsibility.
- Commit to
establishing long-term relationships with staff, volunteers, campers and
families.
- Connect with each
staff member and maintain a positive relationship throughout the summer
and establish a harmonious and supportive tone among all Day Camp
Counselors.
- Be supportive when staff deals with
challenging situations and create opportunities to set personal and
professional goals for the summer.
- Ensure the physical, emotional and social
safety of campers and work with staff to create an environment in which
all campers are respectful of each other and the guidelines of camp.
- Report to the
Executive Director any concerns about the behavior of a particular camper
and report any suspicions of child abuse immediately; document accordingly
on an incident report.
- Build
relationships with Day Camp parents and use them as resources to provide
insight into their child’s behavior.
- Stay informed of
staff choices, especially involving discipline, to ensure that campers
receive fair and appropriate treatment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate or equivalent; two or more years of college preferred.
- Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting in a lead role
- Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, camper psychology, etc…
- At least 21 years of age and with a good driving record (no more than 2 points on license) in order to drive the Y bus.
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date. Must also complete medical administration training.
- Highly organized individual to maintain camp license binder and manage on-site inspections with DHMD.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings. Mental and physical ability to deal with high stress situations and work well under pressure.
