POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
The Tutor is responsible for building a child’s confidence in conjunction with helping develop their academic skills. Tutors are placed with individual students to provide support with homework and other academic needs, and are responsible for developing strategies that help each student succeed in school. In addition, every position in the YMCA of East Tennessee is responsible for upholding the Judeo-Christian principles that are central to our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify the Y’s core values - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
CORE FUNCTIONS:
- Planning, supervising and implementing programs in accordance with policies, procedures, philosophy, and core values of the YMCA.
- Tutors students individually and/or in small groups to review content, explain how to solve problems and check that work is completed.
- Helps students develop study skills and organization techniques to help improve academic performance.
- Works with school day teachers and Coordinators to ensure they are meeting student needs and keeping parents informed of student progress.
- Plans activities for students to coordinate with regular day curriculum.
- Keeps reports on students and shares those reports with supervisors, teachers and parents as needed. Maintains an open line of communication and reports any student/parent dissatisfaction with the program to the Coordinator.
- Acts as a positive role model, building the student’s confidence through positive reinforcement.
- Responsible for safety and wellbeing of the student, and for handling and reporting all incidents with both staff and members to the Coordinator or Director.
- Responsible for collecting and submitting tutoring lesson plans, activity plans, and/or supplies list to the Director or Senior Program Director for Child Care Services. Each tutoring and/or enrichment session MUST include; English Language Arts, Math, or SEL (Social Emotional Learning) component in the lesson plan and subsequent activity.
- Follows all Y policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
There are no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Must be 18 years of age and have a High School Diploma; college degree preferably in the field of education is desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Some teaching/tutoring experience preferred.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or scheduled form.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Frequently required to talk or hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit and use hands and fingers. Employee may occasionally be required to lift 50 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of children or employees of the organization.
