Established in 1858, the YWCA NYC is one of the nation’s oldest nonprofit organizations committed to the personal and social development of women, their families, and their communities. In honor of this history, and in service of our mission, the YWCA NYC currently provides leadership and advocacy training for young women through our Girls Initiatives program, and youth development through our Out-of-School Time (OST) program for elementary and middle school students in culturally diverse communities in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The YWCA of the City of New York is seeking caring, creative and results oriented Activity Specialist. We are looking for specialists committed to positive youth development and who can create and implement curriculum in a middle school setting. Key attributes of a successful Activity Specialist are the ability to manage complex and detailed tasks simultaneously; effectively integrate program philosophy and management policies consistent with organization’s mission and goals; utilization of analytical skills and creativity to implement program initiatives; and the ability to work collaboratively and independently as necessary with key stakeholders and partnering organizations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, Plan and facilitate developmentally appropriate curriculum for all participants, with a focus on the music theory, practice and performance.
- Provide instruments needed for lessons or have a trusted source readily available to provide and store instruments
- Create at minimum 3 theme-based show cases on learned material taught
- Implement YWCA anti-racist and anti-sexist philosophy within the after-school program curriculum
- Manage classroom effectively and create positive learning environment
- Submit required program documentation
- Communicate effectively with Program Director and colleagues
- Communicate effectively with parents and school-day staff
- Maintain music program supplies
- Follow all YW safety protocols and ensuring the supervision of program participants.
Requirements
Other duties as deemed necessary Qualifications:
- Experience in band, music performance, music production
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred or commensurate experience
- Experience teaching school-aged youth in an after-school setting
- Demonstrated effective teaching strategies
- Commitment to promoting YWCA’s social justice mission, educational and youth development philosophy
- At least 2 years of experience working with school-aged students
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Excellent classroom and project management skill
The hours for this position will fluctuate depending on the needs of the school, general hours of operation can range anywhere from 2pm – 6pm on scheduled days (hours can generally fluctuate from 9-12 hours a week). The Activity Specialist must be able to sit and stand for long stretches of time and use a computer and phone to communicate with staff and partners.
