Job Summary:
The Automotive Dealership Controller is responsible for overseeing the dealership's financial operations, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and providing strategic financial guidance to support the dealership’s growth and profitability. This role involves managing the accounting team, monitoring financial performance, and implementing effective financial controls.
The ideal candidate is seeking advancement opportunities as the overall strategic plan for this position is to develop into a more leadership-based role.
Duties and responsibilities include but aren't limited to:
- Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
- Prepares financial statements monthly according to dealership and OEM guidelines.
- Interprets the financial statements and the daily operating control (DOC) regularly and informs the dealership President of developing trends.
- Provides General Managers and department managers with detailed financial and management reports.
- Assists with preparing short- and long-term financial forecasts for the dealership.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
- Manages the dealership computer system to maximize utilization. Additionally supports all IT functions of the company.
- Travel between dealerships, as necessary
- Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management:
- Oversee daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and inventory management.
- Ensures compliance with established Company Accounting Policies, laws and regulations.
- Reviews the reconciliation of general ledger accounts with outside sources to ensure proper bank reconciliation, reserve accounts, factory payables and floor plan payables.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
- Monitor and analyze financial performance metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Regularly and accurately report the financial position of the dealership to the General Manager and the President.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Develop, manage, and analyze annual budgets and forecasts, providing insights to management.
- Conduct variance analysis and provide actionable recommendations to ensure financial targets are met.
Compliance & Audits:
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations as well as dealership policies and procedures.
- Coordinate internal and external audits, ensuring all financial records are accurate and readily available.
Team Leadership:
- Manage and mentor the accounting team, providing guidance on best practices and professional development.
- Foster a positive work environment that encourages teamwork and high performance.
- Responsible for hiring, training and supervision of accounting office personnel.
Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and present financial reports to management and stakeholders and OEM’s translating complex financial data into clear insights.
- Develop and implement financial reporting processes that enhance accuracy and efficiency.

- Participates in the sales and expense analysis to detect potential problem areas and opportunities for improved company profitability
Risk Management:
- Identify financial risks and implement strategies to mitigate them.
- Ensure adequate internal controls are in place to safeguard company assets.
Strategic Support:
- Collaborate with management to develop and implement business strategies that drive profitability and operational efficiency. Participate in strategic planning sessions and provide financial insights to support decision-making.
- In-depth experience in all areas of retail automotive accounting
The best fit for our team will have:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration or other related field of study.
- Certified Professional Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred but not required.
- At least five (5) years of experience in related field / industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous dealership experience preferred.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel is required
- Experience with CDK accounting software preferred.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
