Executive Director

Youth Communication
New York, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 2/6/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/6/2025

Our mission is to elevate teen voices to create real change. Teens in our intensive writing program create true stories about their lives. Those stories are the foundation of curricula and training that are used to create more supportive schools and afterschool programs.

About the Organization

Since 1980, Youth Communication has worked with New York City public high school students to write and publish true stories about their lives. Most of the writers are youth of color, LGBTQ youth, and youth who are recent immigrants, living in foster care, unhoused, or economically struggling. These stories engage and inspire teen readers and help educators and other adults better understand and respond to the young people they work with.

Youth Communication provides social-emotional learning curricula and professional development to help educators and youth workers connect with the teens they serve and build their social and emotional competencies and literacy skills. Our professional development and our curricula for grades 6-12 are based entirely on true stories written by teens in YC's intensive writing workshops. That makes YC's programs and services exceptionally engaging and uniquely culturally responsive to students furthest from opportunity.

Youth Communication is at a pivotal point. Under the leadership of the current executive director, it has built a set of social and emotional learning curricula for grades 6-12 and a robust professional development program to support implementation of the curricula. It has added a sales and marketing team to promote its programs, which have been used by more than 3,000 educators who give the programs very high marks. The challenge now is to find new customers, to create new programs to meet evolving market needs, and to generate supportfrom earned income, foundations, and individualsthat will ensure long-term viability of the work.
