Who We Are:

As part of the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development, Youth Options Unlimited Boston (YOU Boston) is a youth development program that specializes in providing case management services and career development opportunities to Boston-area teens and young adults.

YOU Boston serves young people ages 14-24, who may be court-involved, gang-affiliated, or at-promised. All of the young people we work with are dealing with barriers to stable employment and educational attainment. However, there is no typical YOU Boston member. Our clients come from a diverse spectrum in regards to their home life, education status, court involvement, and work history. Every young person we employ is held to high standards of professionalism, commitment, and attendance.

Job Description:

Position: Cosmetology Instructor

Reports To: Assistant Deputy Director of Career Services

Instructors must be able to effectively design and facilitate daily workshops for a cohort of 10 youth participants. Instructors must commit to YOU Boston's 8-weeks summer career exploration program which includes a 1-week staff training. In total, this role will operate for 9 weeks. From Monday, June 23rd to June 27th, 2025 instructors will conduct training and orientation. Training is followed by 7-weeks of youth programming beginning on Monday, July 7th, 2025, and ending on Friday, August 22nd, 2025. Extension opportunities for fall programming are available based on performance.

The daily duties of the Cosmetology Instructor include, but are not limited to:

• Instruct and guide a cohort of 10 youth between the ages of 14 and 24 in weekly project-based career-specific training.
• Ensure that each youth receives a valuable work and learning experience.
• Conduct three in person live instructional training sessions per week.
• Deliver engaging and informative lessons on cosmetology topics, including but not limited to deep tissue massage, esthetic laser treatment, eyelash extensions, facials, body waxing, and makeup application.
• Develop comprehensive lesson plans that meet curriculum standards and cater to diverse learning styles.
• Strong knowledge of cosmetology practices and techniques.
• Experience in adult education or teaching is preferred.
• Proficiency in classroom management and lesson planning.
• Ability to perform aesthetic treatments such as facials, body waxing, deep tissue massage, makeup application, nail application and other skills.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage students effectively.
• A passion for education and mentoring future professionals in the beauty industry.
• Assess student performance through evaluations, practical tests, and feedback sessions.
• Maintain a positive learning environment that encourages student participation and growth.
• Stay updated with the latest trends and techniques in the cosmetology industry to ensure relevant instruction.
• Assist in administrative tasks related to program management as needed.
• Complete end-of-the-summer evaluations and assessments on each participant with support from ADD of Career Services
• Work independently and report to the Assistant Deputy Director of Career Services.
• Work collaboratively with YOU Boston staff to ensure the safety and progress of all youth participants.

Requirements and Notes for Consideration:

We are looking for strong and creative leaders; those with experience and/or an interest in educating young people. This position requires a high level of organizational and interpersonal skills. Applicants must be able to efficiently design and lead workshops, manage a project, work collaboratively as part of a team, and communicate effectively with staff and youth.

• *Must prepare a curriculum outline that spans over 7 weeks (3 days per week) which will be presented during the scheduled interview*
• Driver’s license
• Experience working with teens preferred
• The schedule is Monday - Thursday, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm (prep time not included)
• Preferred Cosmetology License or Certificate
• Hourly Pay is $27.00 at 15 hours per week, Monday through Thursday 9am - 1pm.
• Can be in-person, and on site Tuesday through Thursday

Your employment status will be as a temporary at-will employee. As an at-will employee, either YOU Boston or you (the at-will employee) may terminate your employment at any time with or without notice or with or without cause.
