The Youth Science Center’s, a non-profit organization, mission is to inform, instruct, and inspire youth of all ages, primarily from disadvantaged communities, to discover the excitement of science and technology by promoting inquiry driven learning through hands-on science activities. The YSC communicates what science is, how scientists and engineers work, and how to apply scientific strategies.
The YSC is seeking a Sewer Science Teacher to teach the Sewer Science program to high school students. The work will be conducted at several different high schools throughout Los Angeles County. The pay rate ranges from $25 - $29.50/hour and includes mileage. Paid training is available immediately.
Position Summary:
Responsible for teaching a week-long Sewer Science curriculum to high school students throughout Los Angeles County from various school districts. Responsible for maintaining and setting up equipment. Responsible for replenishing materials with the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. Must have reliable transportation.
Weekly schedule is determined by the onsite high school teacher and varies from school to school, however, the sewer science program is conducted during school hours beginning early September through early June. This position is part time and is held 5-4 days a week depending on school holidays.
In summary, the sewer science curriculum teaches high school students about the wastewater treatment process and water quality issues.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Teaches Sewer Science curriculum to high school students
- Follows the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County Sewer Science Wastewater Treatment Lab for high school students Student Workbook
- Able to pick up sludge from one of the Sanitation Districts offices on a weekly basis
- Able to transport sludge samples to high schools on a weekly basis.
- Able to keep, maintain, and transport required equipment almost on a daily basis.
- Facilitates students’ acquisition of conceptual understanding of sewer science topics
- Conducts hands-on, inquiry-driven, sewer science activities as specified in the Student Workbook

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (minimum qualifications)
- Computer literate (email, Word, Excel)
- Good written and communication skills
- College degree or working on a college degree in science and/or science education
- Credentialed teacher or working on a credential with qualifying teaching experience
- Work related experience
- Demonstrated leadership
- Must be a team player and able to work well with minimum supervision
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $25.00 - $29.50 per hour
Expected hours: 7.5 – 30 per week
