What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adolescent Mentor position at Youth Service Bureau of Illinois Valley?
POSITION: Adolescent Specialist
QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma with preferred college courses in social services. Sensitivity and responsiveness to the cultural differences of individuals and families outside one’s own. Must have a valid driver’s license and insurance and be willing to drive to the child’s location.
CLASSIFICATION: Part time position (approximately 3 days a week) with flexible hours.
REPORTS TO: Child Welfare Director
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Summary:Works with children in placement to help them navigate everyday life choices.
- Direct Service Duties
With child in placement
- Maintain monthly contact with assigned adolescent who is under DCFS guardianship.
- Act as a mentor to assigned child.
- Will discuss and help facilitate employment applications, job interviews, banking, and maintaining employment.
- Will discuss current and future education including vocational and higher learning schools. Should help complete FAFSA forms.
- Will discuss decision making skills.
- Will discuss safe sexual practices.
- Assigned children should be 16 years of age and up.
- Will work with assigned child on social skills, daily living tasks, scheduling medical appointments, and locating support networks.
- Will refer the adolescent to life skills classes and ensuring completion the Casey Life Skills assessment.
- Indirect Service Duties
- Must write case notes after each visit detailing the activity and topics discussed.
- Document case services according to ethical and professional standards.
- Establish and maintain relationships with adolescents.
- Participate in case staffings and case reviews when requested.
- Adhere to agency policies and procedures.
- Actively participates in YSBIV’s continuous Quality Improvement Program.
