What would my job responsibilities be?

Program Development and Evaluation:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to meet annual revenue goals and long-term sustainability objectives.
  • Develop and manage the program budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources.
  • Stay informed about best practices and trends in youth services, incorporating relevant innovations into program strategies.

Team Supervision:

  • Provide direct supervision to the Philanthropy Associate and Administrative Assistant, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and professional development opportunities.
  • Oversee workload distribution, set clear performance expectations, and conduct regular check-ins to support staff productivity and success.
  • Facilitate collaboration among team members to optimize efficiency and effectiveness in fundraising and administrative operations.
  • Address performance concerns promptly and collaboratively, fostering a positive and supportive work environment.

Fundraising Planning and Execution:

  • Develop, implement, direct, and evaluate the overall fundraising plan, including annual giving, major gifts, direct mail campaigns, special events, sponsorships, underwriting, planned giving, and grants from corporations, foundations, government agencies, and other organizations.
  • Write persuasive funding proposals and serve as the project team leader for grant activities, collaborating effectively with program staff. Be familiar with submitting proposals through various methods, including hard copy, email, online, and government agency portals.
  • Actively participate in the planning, coordination, and execution of agency special events.

Public Relations and Community Engagement:

  • Develop, plan, and coordinate media campaigns to enhance community awareness and public support. Engage in public speaking and media interviews as appropriate.
  • Develop and coordinate the agency’s public relations plan.
  • Actively engage in community relations in partnership with the Executive Director.
  • Oversee the agency’s website, social media, and other digital communications.
  • Oversee the development, design, and update of agency marketing materials, including logos, brochures, annual agency fact sheet, invitations, letterhead, and other items. Provide oversight for all production and distribution.
  • Serve as the contact person for third-party fundraising events, reviewing all materials for appropriateness before granting permission for agency association and use of the agency logo.

Donor Relations and Stewardship:

  • Serve as the primary point-of-contact and liaison with current and prospective donors, maintaining positive relationships at all times.
  • Hold face-to-face cultivation, solicitation, and meetings with current and prospective donors, involving the Executive Director, Board Members, Program Directors, and others as appropriate.
  • Host agency site visits for funders.
  • Support and oversee the solicitation, acceptance, and distribution of in-kind donations, ensuring effective and consistent gift acceptance policies.

Database and Reporting:

  • Monitor community or regional trends and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary.
  • Serve as the fundraising database administrator, developing and refining related policies and procedures, overseeing data entry, database maintenance, and data integrity. Ensure timely acknowledgment letters and documentation of donor contacts. Oversee database reports and report generation.
  • Proactively engage in mailing list management to ensure accurate information for mailings.
  • Oversee grant reporting and program evaluation for all funders with reporting requirements, ensuring database systems capture and evaluate performance measures accurately. Ensure precise data extraction and timely report submissions.
  • Ensure effective file management related to grants and other fundraising approaches, both electronically and in hard copy.
  • Serve as a liaison with related vendors, such as database software companies, print brokers, graphic designers, and others.
  • Mission Alignment and Professional Development:
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board during periodic review and refinement of agency mission and goals.
  • Seek out and participate in professional development opportunities.

Incentive Opportunities:

  • The Philanthropy Director is eligible for a performance-based bonus structure tied to achieving and exceeding fundraising goals, donor retention, grant success, and major gift contributions, as aligned with the organization's mission and financial capacity.

What are the qualifications and experience I need to become a Director of Philanthropy for YSFS?

  • Basic finance and budget skills.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills. Strong planning and project management skills. Ability to work under pressure and adjust to changing priorities and deadlines. Ability to manage tasks independently and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail along with an understanding of how work benefits and makes transformative change for young people possible.
  • Ability to lead as well as participate as part of a dynamic team.
  • Ability to interact effectively with people representing a wide and diverse range of experiences and backgrounds. Commitment to diversity.
  • Computer software skills including Windows, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word.
  • Initiative, creativity, reliability, flexibility, thoroughness, persistence, and attentiveness with focus on building long-term relationships with donors, agency staff, board members, and community members.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Excellent spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills. Ability to write persuasively for a wide range of audiences.

Preferred

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

What are the minimum education requirements?

  • Master’s degree in relevant field, preferred.
  • OR bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with two years of relevant fundraising experience required. CFRE credential a plus.
  • OR High School Diploma or GED and four or more years of relevant fundraising experience. Fundraising, marketing, communications, nonprofit administration, or related experience preferred. Education and/or experience involving not-for-profit fundraising preferred.
  • Proven track record of securing major grants and gifts. Experience with federal grants preferred.
  • Program evaluation and grant reporting experience
