Yu Ming Charter School is a non-profit, tuition-free network of public schools located in Oakland and San Leandro and open to all residents of California. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Family Engagement and Outreach Manager assists the Principals and Chief Operations Officer in developing and implementing a comprehensive program to increase and deepen family engagement in support of student academic and personal success at Yu Ming. The Family Engagement and Outreach Manager will support the development of a strong partnership between families, staff, and the broader community. Strong relationships between families and school allow us to learn from families how to best support their children at Yu Ming and beyond, as well as helping families to strengthen their capacity to support the academic, social, and emotional growth of their children. The Family Engagement and Outreach Manager will be active on school campuses and highly visible to families, staff and community. In addition to developing relationships with current families, the Family Engagement and Outreach Manager will coordinate outreach efforts in order to recruit a diverse student body by engaging with the community at large, and delegating outreach tasks to volunteers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Family Engagement
- Develop programs and resources for families that ensure equity, school success, belonging, and retention of underrepresented families and special populations at Yu Ming (e.g. FRL, African American, LatinX, Students with Disabilities, Homeless and Foster Youth)
- Coordinate and liaise between Yu Ming families and staff to develop strong relationships, executing a vision and system for family communications in partnership with campus leadership and the Communications & Development Manager
- Support school leaders, teachers, and families to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive school community (e.g. staff affinity groups, school-wide cultural celebrations, etc.)
- Coordinate and execute family engagement in key school events and activities (e.g. family preparation, recruitment, communication, translation, childcare) including but not limited to Student Led Conferences, FSO Meetings, Back to School Night, Affinity Groups, bi-weekly Cha and Chats, and other family engagement opportunities
- Collect, analyze and report data on family engagement including the execution of family surveys, family attendance at key family engagement events, family access to offered resources to identify areas of strength and growth related to inclusion and engagement of underrepresented families
Family Leadership Development and Advocacy
- Coordinate family leadership groups (e.g. family preparation, recruitment, communication, translation, childcare) including but not limited to FSO Council/Parent Advisory Committee, ELAC, SEAC
- Co-facilitate Equity Design Team with school leadership helping to develop annual and long-term goals through a high engagement and partnership strategies including liberatory design processes
- Facilitate or support workshops, parent trainings, and organizing cycles for families along their interests and leadership development goals
- Develop family leaders to make an impact in their students’ education and in their communities in areas of greatest need and concern for families (e.g. access to quality education, voter registration, civic engagement, college access, etc.)
Outreach and Recruitment
- Working closely with the Chief Operations Officer, Communications & Development Manager, and family volunteers to lead the execution of a strong outreach and equitable recruitment strategy of underrepresented families and special populations to ensure engagement, connection and belonging throughout the enrollment process
- Engage in outreach efforts to the families, neighborhoods, and community organizations we serve and partner with to ensure diverse and inclusive student enrollment
- Attend and support enrollment events and tours and support targeted outreach efforts for underrepresented families to ensure equitable access to Yu Ming

QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated experience working with families from diverse backgrounds, and underserved communities, in educational and/or non-profit engagement programs
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Detail and process oriented, able to develop and implement programming necessary to build capacity and organizational structure
- Ability to develop initiatives and long-term plans and proposals to support strategic objectives
- Ability to listen deeply to key stakeholders, understand, and reflect back challenges and guide individuals through a solutions-finding process
- Ability to connect with people from diverse ethnic, socio-economic, and professional backgrounds
- Outstanding project management skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks and project simultaneously
- Self-driven, comfortable with ambiguity, experience developing innovative strategies to meet challenges with flexibility and creativity
- Spanish Language Skills Preferred
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
12 Months, Exempt Employee, starting July 2025
TIME COMMITMENT
Typical schedule is 7:45am-3:45pm M-F during the school year; attendance at evening and weekend events may be required occasionally.
COMPENSATION
$72,000-$76,000 commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits fully covered for full-time employees (depending on the selected plan).
