DEFINITION
Under close supervision, to perform a variety of simple clerical tasks and to do other work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Sorts and files papers, books, bills, receipts and a variety of documents; searches and maintains files for specified information; receives and routes correspondence; contacts the public, staff and students; answers the telephone and provides routine factual information; may perform a limited amount of typing of memos and correspondence.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education and/or Experience: High school diploma supplemented by course work in general office skills required. Minimum of one year of general clerical and typing experience required.
Knowledge and Skills: Requires basic knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment including receptionist and telephone techniques and etiquette. Requires knowledge and understanding of the principles and procedures of record keeping. Must understand mathematical principles. Requires good English, grammar, spelling and punctuation. Must have good organizational and communication skills.
Abilities: Requires the ability to perform the duties of the position efficiently and effectively, under close supervision. Must be able to learn, understand and apply District rules, regulations and policies. Requires the ability to operate standard office machines and equipment, including typewriters, switchboards, copiers, calculators, word processors, printers, etc. Must be able to maintain records and prepare reports. Requires the ability to communicate with students, other employees and the public in a manner which reflects positively on the department and District.
Physical Abilities: Requires sufficient hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity to keyboard at a basic rate (40 wpm); sufficient visual acuity to recognize words, letters and numbers; speech and hearing ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone. Ability to reach and pull materials from files and shelves. Ability to lift light objects (less than 20 lbs.) on an intermittent basis.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid California Driver’s License.
