JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT ORCHESTRA DIRECTOR
JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Orchestra Director will play a vital role in supporting the growth and development of Yukon Public School’s Orchestra program, spanning grades 6-12. This position will assist the Orchestra Director in managing the program's operations, focusing on student instruction, logistical coordination, and program promotion. Essential Functions:
- Assist the Orchestra Director in teaching and mentoring students in grades 6-12, fostering their musical skills and appreciation.
- Lead sectional rehearsals and provide individualized instruction to students as needed.
- Collaborate with the Orchestra Director to develop and implement engaging and challenging curriculum aligned with district standards.
- Evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback to encourage growth.
- Assist in preparing students for performances, competitions, and auditions.
- Maintain a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.
- Assist with the organization and management of orchestra events, including concerts, rehearsals, and trips.
- Support the maintenance and inventory of instruments, equipment, and uniforms.
- Collaborate with the Orchestra Director on fundraising activities and budget management.
- Assist in communication with parents, students, and school administration.
- Help promote the orchestra program within the school and community.
- Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned, such as concerts, bus rides, contests, and clinics.
- Promote positive student behavior in all environments.
- Work closely with the Orchestra Director to ensure the smooth operation of the program.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
- Participate in professional development activities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
- Collaborate with other music educators and professionals to share best practices.
- Adhere to all district policies and procedures.
- Assist with maintaining accurate records of student attendance, grades, and program activities.
- Support the Orchestra Director in complying with local, state, and federal regulations, including OSSAA guidelines.
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of students in the orchestra program.
EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Sustained, successful experience as a head orchestra director or assistant orchestra director
- Bachelor’s Degree and standard teaching certificate required; Master’s Degree preferred
- CDL/School Bus License preferred
- Knowledge of OSSAA policies and procedures
- Strong interpersonal skills, to include written communication, verbal communication, organization, and conflict resolution skills
- Organizational skills, basic mathematical skills, basic computer skills, and communication skills are an essential part of this job
- Must have expertise in promoting the musical development of orchestra students
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule
- Will be required to regularly stand, walk, and stoop; kneel, crouch or crawl; must be able to regularly climb stairs
- Must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds
- May experience constant interruptions, inflexible deadlines, and changes to normal routines.
- The noise level in this environment is elevated to loud.
- The demands of an extended workday (events, etc.) require a high level of physical endurance.
- In-district and out-of-town travel is required, as necessary, for training and/or to carry out duties and responsibilities
- Must have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and reliable transportation
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- 182 day contract
- Salary Range: Based on the certified teacher salary schedule, according to full time experience leading an Orchestra program as either an assistant director, director, or full time instructor
- Benefits (as of 2-13-25): YPS pays employee and employer portion of OTRS contributions; 10 sick days annually, 3 personal leave days, 3 annual leave days; sick leave sharing; $10,000 life insurance policy; paid vision insurance for the employee; paid health insurance for the employee
