IT System Engineer III

Overview

The Systems Engineer III provides leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to coworkers. May act as a lead or first-level supervisor. Performs administration and support functions in a large multi-server environment. This includes Windows, Linux, UNIX, virtualized platforms, load balancers, Docker containers, and cloud computing. Designs, installs, configures, maintains, performs and tests server-based technologies for both server installations of software and implementation of server infrastructure. Administers backup and restoration processes for all Yusen mission critical systems. Creates and/or maintains infrastructure security including settings for servers, devices in the DMZ, OS patching, and corporate anti-virus. Tests configurations and monitors the performance of equipment; troubleshoots and resolves problems. Documents installation for applications, system configurations, and their functions. In addition, the Systems Engineer III automates infrastructure capabilities for deployments, backups, security, and monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Engage closely with architects, software engineers and other operations teams to deliver highly available and scalable services
• Administration of DevOps and the processes to optimize service delivery (CI/CD)
• Daily administration of Azure Services, VMWare, Kubernetes, containers, storage, and backups
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve high level technical issues involving multiple systems and networks on-premise and in the cloud
• SAN and general storage administration including capacity planning, performance, storage forecasting, provisioning storage, reclaiming unused storage, archiving old data, and preventing capacity issues.
• Performs daily backup administration, maintenance, troubleshooting, validation, and monitoring functions.
• Demonstrate understanding of SMTP, TCP/IP, Active Directory, DNS, HTTP, FTP, and other technologies as required.
• Deploy server systems and software.
• Tunes, monitors and patches servers – either physical or virtual, cloud or non-cloud based.
• Participates in site preparation for more complex server installations.
• For moderately complex systems performs application integration to ensure that all software, infrastructure and communication networks operate properly together.
• Conducts software rollouts that target a large group of the user community.
• Provides complex technical support to end-users. Provides higher level support for the Help Desk and Desktop groups.
• Provides moderately complex technical support to server clients. Resolves problems and manages incidents at the server level. Escalates any unresolved problems to manager.
• Monitors access to the networks by addressing issues of data security, account generation and file access at the service area level.
• Monitors and tests infrastructure and configurations to ensure optimal performance per established objectives.
• Maintains configurations of existing systems to ensure proper operation. If required, identifies and communicates local site needs for server infrastructure and software.
• Helps to establish and maintain standards for server computer infrastructure and software.
• Documents installation procedures for applications. Assists in documenting network management.
• Creates and maintains detailed documentation of all computer configurations and their functions.
• Supports all infrastructure/software applications used at Yusen Logistics
• Assists in the formulation of work schedules for development and maintenance activities.
• Will be assigned to an on-call weekly rotation and be expected to resolve issues after normal business hours
• Performs other duties as assigned.
  
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or other related field is preferred, but not required as appropriate experience will be considered.
• 4-6 years’ experience in a large multi-server, multi-site, 24x7 environment using these skills: installation of server infrastructure, server software upgrades/ patches, functional systems design, networking protocols, technical project management, data analysis, Microsoft Windows server administration, Unix server administration, clustered systems administration, VMWare/ Hypervisor virtual server administration, Azure, AWS.
• Kubernetes and containers
• Familiarity with SQL databases
• Familiarity with DevOps
• Basic understanding of Microsoft SQL including security, maintenance jobs, query execution is desired
• One or more of the certifications listed below is highly desired: Microsoft Certified Software Engineer, Cisco Certified Network Associate, VMWare Certified Professional, Cloud platform certifications (AWS, Azure, Google)
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and solve problems and to communicate with and support clients.
• Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people effectively.
• Ability to travel.
