Job Summary
Pay : $16-$17
Temporary role until June 1st with the possibility of becoming full-time through September 1st.
The Youth Counselor position provides direct service to participants with a focus on inspiring youth to make positive decisions for themselves and their futures. Youth Counselors typically focus in one of several programs (Beacons, Strong Fast Fit, Contact Plus, OST, Eureka! and RAP). This part-time position provides direct service to participants in the Girls Inc. OST program, ages 9-18, and supports occasional Saturday Eureka! groups and miscellaneous workshops. There is an opportunity for full-time hours during summer program.
Youth Counselors build and maintain relationships with Minneapolis Public School contacts, and other youth serving agencies, to meet necessary programming goals and objectives. This position utilizes Girls Inc. curriculum to facilitate groups during out of school time hours.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Implement comprehensive programming :
Recruit and maintain program participants by providing program presentations to schools and youth serving agencies
Plan, prepare and facilitate / co-facilitate age appropriate and culturally sensitive educational activities that focus on math, science, economic literacy, leadership development, pregnancy prevention, and positive decision-making using Girls Inc. curriculum
Create and maintain a safe learning environment that is student-centered, mission-focused and accessible to a diverse student body
Support communication with participants and families, and organize and support retention efforts to maintain participants
Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with school personnel and other youth serving agencies.
Refer youth to other appropriate community resources as needed and as necessary
Participate on external committees to plan and / or implement appropriate community meetings or events and agency task forces
Administration :
Collect registration forms, participant demographic information, and track program attendance
Deliver and obtain program evaluation information from participants for program quality assurance and reporting purposes
Maintain the online data management system with a commitment to accuracy and regularity
Write monthly summaries of activities and impact of direct service on participants
Responsibly manage funds for expenses related to programming.
Seek continuous professional development :
Attend and participate in departmental and program team meetings
Participate in educational activities and trainings to improve achievement of program goals.
Keep up-to-date on current youth and program-related trends.
RELATIONSHIPS :
This position reports to the Program Coordinator of assigned Program, who reports to the Girls and Youth Director. The incumbent will interact with Girls and Youth counselors, Minneapolis Public Schools contacts, youth participants and parents. Critical relationships will include school contacts and participants. Collaborate with colleagues to manage a successful program for all participants
QUALIFICATIONS : Required :
Minimum of two years college or equivalent two years' experience working with youth from low-income and inner city families
One-year experience with planning and facilitating effective, structured groups
Knowledge of youth development
Strong oral, written and presentation skills
Ability to facilitate and teach comprehensive groups
Ability to carry out duties independently, as well as in a team setting
Ability to work with a variety of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives
Strong problem solving skills and ability to make quick decisions while using good judgment
Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
Possess current CPR and First Aid certification, or successfully obtain within 90 days of hire
Strong belief in YWCA and ability to convey its importance
Preferred :
BA or BS in education, youth development, social services, or related field.
Two years' experience creating age-appropriate activities and curriculum.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
The ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Must be able to travel to various YWCA Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, and community sites.
