Summary
The Substitute Teacher provides temporary classroom support to ensure a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for children. This position collaborates with teaching staff to maintain daily operations, implements age-appropriate activities, and ensures the well-being of children in compliance with program guidelines. The role serves as an essential resource in maintaining continuity of care and education when regular teachers are unavailable.
Duties and Responsibilities
Classroom Support and Supervision
- Maintain a safe and nurturing environment for children in accordance with program health and safety standards.
- Follow prepared lesson plans and activities to promote children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
- Provide structure and consistency in the classroom, including supervising and engaging children in planned activities.
- Adapt to the needs of children and the classroom while maintaining program routines.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with teaching staff to ensure seamless operations and adherence to classroom schedules.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with parents regarding children’s activities, behavior, or concerns.
- Support and engage with volunteers or additional staff as required.
Program Operations
- Maintain a tidy and organized classroom environment, including cleaning and sanitizing as needed.
- Ensure compliance with all policies, including sign-in/sign-out procedures and recordkeeping requirements.
- Provide support in preparing and serving meals or snacks following program guidelines.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong ability to adapt to different classroom settings and quickly establish rapport with children.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with children, staff, and parents.
- Organizational skills to maintain a structured environment and follow established routines.
- Ability to provide consistent and compassionate care to children.
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- NC Early Childhood Credentials or equivalent certification preferred.
- Experience working with children in an educational or childcare setting.
- CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
Working Conditions
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including availability on short notice.
- Regular interaction with children in a classroom or childcare environment.
- May involve exposure to childhood illnesses.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to stand for extended periods and engage in physical activities with children.
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
Travel Required:
Minimal travel may be required for professional development or program needs.
