Residential Summer Camp Counselor (Seasonal)

Overview: Camp Counselors are professionals who provide care, mentorship, and leadership at Camp Hochelaga for the summer camp season. The ideal camp counselor at Hochelaga is someone committed to creating safe, welcoming community spaces for all, and someone who feels confident in their ability to act as a role model for our campers.

For all seasonal staff, the camp season is June to August*. YWCA Vermont Camp Hochelaga serves more than 1,000 people each summer through camp programs, facilities use, and volunteer opportunities that engage the community in YWCA’s mission, eliminating racism and empowering women.

*The exact dates are dependent on your specific role, which certifications/trainings you will be a part of, and our seasonal calendar for camp – we will discuss with you the exact dates during the interview/hiring process

Salary: This position is classified as seasonal, exempt. Salary is based upon applicant's skills and experience. During your time employed with Camp Hochelaga, 3 meals per-day will be provided by camp, as well as a space to stay for any residential counselors, and counselors unable to commute.

Responsible to: Head of Line, and as needed: Camp Director & Assistant Camp Director

Qualifications:

• All Residential Camp Staff will live on-site during the summer
• Someone who knows how to take proactive initiative
• Someone with a strong sense of personal accountability
• Demonstrate exceptional leadership skills
• Show up as a consistent and positive mentor and source of support and care for campers ages 5-17

Responsibilities:

• Provide care and supervision for campers in your program area and cabin/group of responsibility

• Supervise all assigned aspects of campers’ day including morning reveille, clean-up times, meal times, rest hour, activities or classes, bed-time and other on-duty times

• Monitor campers to ensure their safety and wellbeing while at camp at all times while on duty

• Plan, prepare for, and deliver programming for campers in assigned programming areas

• Maintain long standing Hochelaga traditions and emphasize a camp culture that is

relevant, healthy and fun

• Work closely with program area coordinators to plan engaging programming across all areas of camp throughout the season

• Fully engage and participate in staff training week

• Attend all relevant and assigned staff meetings

• Support and instruct campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuations, specific Line emergency protocols or other emergency situations

• Teach and monitor proper use of equipment, supplies and safety considerations

• Evaluate current season and make recommendations for equipment, supplies, staff needs and program improvements for the following season

• Lead by example in observing and enforcing camp guidelines and safety regulations

• These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required

Essential Functions:

• Maintain a balanced schedule that includes rest and self care along with work and play
• Communicate and work with a variety of age and skill level groups and provide necessary instruction to staff and campers
• Identify and respond appropriately to environmental and other hazards related to the activity or situation
• Plan and conduct activities and supervise camper safety
• Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers in all assigned areas while on duty (camp days can be long - typically from 8am-10pm)
• Set up, demonstrate, guide, and to teach class specific skills to campers of all ages
• Understanding of when to request, and accept guidance and supervision
• Respect and cooperate with fellow staff and administration
• Participate in a strenuous camp program with campers, while maintaining a high level of energy and enthusiasm
• Ability to self-motivate, and lead as a role model to our campers
