Overview: We are seeking an experienced and creative Choreographer to join our middle school musical production team. The Choreographer will be responsible for designing and teaching original choreography, working closely with the Director and Musical Director to create a cohesive and dynamic performance that highlights the students' talents. This role requires a strong understanding of dance in a musical theater context and a passion for working with younger performers, many of whom may have limited dance experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Dance Styles: Proficiency in Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Jazz, and Ballet dance styles (no tap required).
- Experience: At least 5 years of dance experience, with 2 years of experience choreographing, preferably for younger or middle school-aged performers.
- Auditions: Lead the dance portion of auditions and callbacks, creating and teaching dance combinations. Assess students’ skills and provide input during the casting process.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Director to align the choreography with the overall vision of the production. Coordinate with the Musical Director to ensure choreography matches musical phrasing and timing.
- Creative Freedom: While original choreography is encouraged, the Choreographer may also adapt or incorporate elements from previous productions if desired.
- Rehearsals: Plan and execute rehearsals based on a mutually agreed schedule with the Director. Expectation to teach foundational dance skills to performers with limited experience.
- Choreographic Design: Design formations, sequences, and movements, adapting to the skill level of the cast.
- Costume & Set Coordination: Collaborate with the Director, Production Manager, and Costume Designer to ensure choreography is feasible within the costume designs and set limitations.
- Rehearsal Schedule: The number of hours per week and rehearsal time commitment will be determined in partnership with the Director.
- Dance Captains: Assign dance captains, if necessary, to assist with rehearsals, although this is not expected to be a common practice.
- Conflict Management: Handle any conflicts or resistance from students according to school policies on conflict resolution.
Qualifications:
- Strong background in Musical Theatre, Contemporary, Jazz, and Ballet dance.
- Minimum 5 years of dance experience, including 2 years in choreography.
- Prior experience working with middle school or younger performers is preferred.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Creative, flexible, and able to adapt choreography to suit students’ varying skill levels.
Time Commitment:
- Attend at least 87.5% of rehearsals (4 days a week, 3 PM - 5 PM).
- Participate in pre-production meetings starting in mid-November, with rehearsals beginning in January.
- Attend all tech week rehearsals and final performances in March.
