POSITION SUMMARY
The golf course foreman works under the golf course superintendent and assistant golf course superintendent in a supervisory capacity. Responsibilities include delegating work assignments, overseeing job performance and inspecting course conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Golf Course Foreman:
- Oversees the completion of work assignments by crew members and assists with field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards and machinery use.
- Enforces safe working conditions with all job assignments and is responsible for instructing staff on proper equipment use and work methods.
- Supervises special projects and labor crews.
- Understand and perform all aspects of golf course maintenance.
- Inspection of golf course and maintenance areas daily for vandalism and environmental/safety issues.
- Conduct daily security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys.
- Apply fertilizer/pesticides as needed.
- Assist in completing daily project schedules for maintenance staff.
- Help determine immediate and future needs of the golf course.
- Train staff on the safe operation of maintenance equipment.
- Assist with the agronomic planning and implementation.
- Set up and utilize computer and radio-controlled irrigation system.
- Fulfill Assistant Superintendent duties and responsibilities in absence.
- Precision mow greens, tees, aprons, fairways, around trees and other turf areas.
- Operate equipment, power tools, and hand tools in maintaining golf course.
- Verti-cut, aerate and top-dress tees, greens, fairways and other turf areas.
- Lay sod as required.
- Fertilize and spray tees, greens, fairways, and other turf areas with pesticides.
- Water golf course grounds per prescribed methods.
- Change cups and maintain flags and poles.
- Operate and maintain poser equipment used on the golf courses.
- Operate power equipment used on golf courses.
- Drive light and heavy vehicles.
- Maintain irrigation systems on golf courses.
- Knowledge of methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in golf course maintenance.
- Ability to work as a team member to accomplish daily-required duties and aide the new or less experienced worker.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Manages the building maintenance program and improvement projects.
- Reports golf course conditions and all disciplinary problems to the golf course superintendent or assistant golf course superintendent.
Opens the maintenance shop and runs operations in the absence of the golf course superintendent and assistant golf course superintendent.
Qualifications
- POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Education/Credentials
- A degree in horticulture, grounds or landscaping or a diploma combined with operational experience.
- A minimum of two to three years of golf course maintenance experience.
- A minimum of two years of supervisory experience.
- Ability to work independently and collectively as a team.
- Must be able to exert physical strength.
- Must be able to lift heavy supplies/equipment.
- Ability to work in various climates and temperatures.
- Ability to work as a team member and follow directions.
- Normal vision and hearing.
Experience
Previous experience at a resort/club is preferred.

Other Requirements
· Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in grounds construction, landscaped area maintenance work and building maintenance and improvement.
· Ability to operate trucks and light motorized equipment.
· Knowledge of agronomy, turfgrass science and the rules of golf.
· Ability to follow oral and written directions.
· Working knowledge of basic electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system, including automatic valves and controllers and various types of pumps and pumping systems.
· Proven leadership capabilities.
· Possession of a valid driver's license.
