Lifeguard
TEAM: WATERFRONT
REPORTS TO: WATERFRONT COORDINATOR
Position Description:
Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining the safety of all guests and campers at the Zephyr Point waterfront. The Waterfront Team provides supervision for the marked off swimming area, maintains a clean and safe environment on the ZP beachfront area, and oversight of ZP waterfront during camp swim hours. In addition to the safety of swimmers, Lifeguards provide additional support to camp programs such as the Friday Faire, delivering skits for Morning Briefing, and more. Lifeguards must be reliable and have good communications skills, as well as have the ability to cope with stressful emergency events.

Responsibilities
- Works under supervision of the Waterfront Coordinator and the Activities Coordinator
- Lifeguard for program participants during all program swim times
- Enforce waterfront rules and regulation for all guests when on duty
- Facilitate swim tests for all youth program participants.
- Uphold lifeguard skills through in-service trainings throughout the summer.
- Maintain physical fitness as is essential for the position through team workouts and swims 3-4 days a week
- Facilitate all watercraft rental and use in a rotating schedule with other members of the waterfront team.
- Design and deliver skits every morning at Day Camp Morning Briefing
- Help move the waterslide with the Recreation Director each week
- Exercise sound judgment and decision-making to assess and mitigate hazards
- Effectively build rapport with campers, counselors, and Zephyr Point staff, cabin guests and guest groups
- Role-model inclusive behavior and facilitate a positive group culture
- Maintain high energy, positive attitude, and focus on campers’ and counselors’ safety and enjoyment of program
- Aid with daily check-in/check-out & transportation for Day Camp program (when assigned)
- Participation in intentional community as a member of the Zephyr Point Summer Staff
- Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of one year out of High School by June 2025
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- Ability to handle swimming daily in chilly water temperatures
- Physical fitness to handle all trainings and certifications required for position
- Strong decision-making skills, ability to work without direct supervision and adaptable to changing, dynamic environments.
- Ability to enforce rules with difficult patrons at times.
- Professionalism in attitude and appearance
- Ability to manage self-care and energy throughout a busy and intense summer.
Required Certifications – Must be obtained by the first day of camp
Certifications must be valid through employment end date.
- CPR/First Aid certification (Provided during staff training week, if needed)
- Lifeguard Certification (provided on-site between June 3-6, if needed)
Preferred Qualifications
- College degree or coursework in elementary education or other related fields
- Proficiency in Spanish
- Previous experience working in a camp setting.
- Previous experience lifeguarding, on swim teams, or other swim related sports
Required Physical Demands
- Ability to swim in chilly water temperatures daily for up to 30 minutes at a time.
- Ability to walk or run at times on uneven surfaces.
- Ability to withstand long days in the sun and heat as well as cold windy days with lots of exposure.
- Ability to carry up to 50lbs.
Work Schedule:
The Lifeguard position begins June 12th, 2025 and terminates on August 17th, 2025. Lifeguards are expected to maintain a flexible and changing schedule throughout the summer that is dependent on the programs scheduled for each week. Standard work hours for members of the Waterfront Team will typically be from 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday-Friday. Lifeguards must be on duty when youth program participants swim at the waterfront. Most days lifeguards will be on duty Monday-Friday 1:00-4:00pm for Camp Zephyr and Beyond Camp Zephyr. Other duties will fill most mornings and later afternoons. Some weekend work may be required for swim tests for residential programs.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Compensation: $3,750 total for the summer
- Housing in Lakeview Lodge (June 12th– August 17th)
- Meals provided Monday-Friday through term of employment
- Travel and certification stipends are available
