The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is an internationally recognized military laboratory located in Natick, Massachusetts, with the overreaching research goal of maximizing and optimizing Warfighter health and performance. USARIEM's research is divided into three divisions: Thermal and Mountain Medicine, Military Performance, and Military Nutrition.
What will I be doing?
The U.S. Army Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a part-time one-year research opportunity to learn and train under USARIEM scientists. As military readiness is a top priority, the mission of USARIEM is to optimize Warfighter health and performance through medical research. As an ORISE faculty research fellow, you will take part in conducting research on the biomechanics of potential mechanisms of injury with a focus on the spine during heavy deadlifts to improve performance and assess injury risk in the lower back. You will participate in research activities ranging from study conception to briefing, data collection and analysis, to manuscript publication. This ORISE appointment to create new experiences for you to share with current students and faculty members at your respective university.
*The ORISE faculty research fellow will be mentored by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Tak Nagai.
Why should I apply?
The testing procedures for the deadlift study will involve the use of biomechanics laboratory and equipment including surface EMG, markerless/markered motion analysis system, and biomechanics software. The data collection will take place in Savannah, Georgia. As the ORISE Faculty Research Fellow, you will be asked to brief the study/project in front of potential participants and perform informed consents/scheduling testing (coordinating with the study participants and biomechanics team.
The ORISE Faculty Research Fellow will learn and be involved in the different aspects of the project:
- Hands-on experience to become proficient/familiar with laboratory testing procedures
