What are the responsibilities and job description for the Postdoctoral Military Performance Research Fellowship position at Zintellect?
The United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a currently pursuing or degree-received doctoral fellowship in Natick, Massachusetts.
What will I be doing?
As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to participate in collaborative research studies focused on Arctic Warfighter performance optimization and cold physiology. These studies seek to characterize the physiological responses of dismounted troops to combined thermal and metabolic strain and develop new methods for predicting physiological impacts, performance decrements, and cold injuries. Additionally, you will conduct research examining human physical and cognitive performance in cold environments. You will conduct environmental chamber and field studies on human volunteers to develop a) strategies to minimize the adverse consequences (performance and health) in cold-weather environments and b) cold-weather guidance for military operations.
Why should I apply?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. You will also engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to,
- Gain knowledge, skills, and abilities related to exercise thermophysiology, writing peer review journal publications, and advanced data analysis and predictive modeling.
- Obtain valuable educational experience by learning about human research policies and procedures, data collection/storage/entry, and research team development.
Where will I be located?
Natick, Massachusetts
What is the anticipated start date?
USAMRDC RIEM wants to make appointment selections by June 6, 2023. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a 12-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and participant availability.
What are the benefits?

About USARIEM
USARIEM was established in 1961 as a research laboratory under the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (now USAMRMC). USARIEM is internationally recognized as the DoD’s premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance. The Institute is organized into five divisions: Biophysics and Biomedical Modeling, Military Performance, Military Nutrition, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. By leveraging its unique capabilities and facilities with industry, academia, and the government, USARIEM produces a variety of important products, including performance optimization doctrine, preventive medicine and planning doctrine, material development support, physiological monitoring strategies, predictive algorithms, and Health Hazard Assessments.
