Zintellect
Bethesda, MD Intern
POSTED ON 3/29/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/29/2025

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Research Participation Program provides undergraduates, and recent college graduates an opportunity to study disciplines related to biomedical sciences.

Program mentors have achieved international recognition as highly productive and innovative researchers. The program continues a tradition of excellence reflected in the several Nobel prizes and other prestigious awards that have resulted from its work. Many scientists trained at NIDDK are now prominent faculty members at leading universities throughout the world.

What will I be doing?

Participants will conduct biomedical research and training related to diabetes mellitus; endocrine, bone, and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases, including liver diseases and nutritional disorders; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases.  They will also have the opportunity to conduct research on state-of-the-art imaging equipment and will gain experience in new multi-modality imaging techniques. Additionally, they will learn to compile data for mathematical models and case studies that play a key role in understanding the effects of multi-organ disease progression.

What is the anticipated start date?

The NIDDK is actively reviewing applications and is looking to fill positions as soon as qualified applicants are identified. We encourage you to apply and submit your application as soon as possible.

Where will I be located?

Research will be conducted in the Institute's laboratories and clinical facilities in Bethesda, Maryland.

What are the provisions?

You will receive a competitive stipend for living and other expenses as determined by the NIH. Stipends are typically based on academic level, discipline, and experience. You may also be eligible to receive a health insurance allowance.

Nature of Appointment

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The initial appointment is typically offered for a one-year and may be renewed yearly up to an additional four years, upon recommendation of NIDDK contingent on the availability of funds and project needs. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at NIDDK in the Bethesda, MD, area. Participants will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with NIH, NIDDK, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE letter of appointment and Terms of Appointment.
