Saw Filer

Job Summary:
The Saw Filer Technician is responsible for performing saw filing tasks and ensuring adherence to all company safety guidelines and regulations. The role requires effective communication and teamwork within the maintenance and production departments, under the supervision of the department supervisor and head saw filer.

Key Responsibilities:
The following duties are essential, but not limited to:

• Align and maintain saw centers, chippers, slabbers, including laser alignment of rolls, guides, and tracks.
• Bench, fit, swage, and grind saws and knives.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair double-cut and single-cut band saws, edgers, trim saws, and other related equipment.
• Utilize appropriate tools and machinery to sharpen saws.
• Grind band mills as required.
• Ensure the maintenance of a safe working environment and encourage safe working habits among colleagues.
• Apply lock-out/tag-out procedures at all times.
• Report any potential machinery defects and safety hazards immediately.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Qualifications:
The following qualifications are required, but not limited to:

• Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes.
• In-depth knowledge of sawing systems and saw/knife filing techniques, with a focus on sawing accuracy for band and round saws, machine alignment, and related maintenance.
• Experience in diagnosing and troubleshooting double-cut and single-cut band and round saws.
• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Foster a collaborative and safety-focused team environment.
• Willingness to work overtime or off shifts as needed.

Education and Experience:
Previous sawmill experience is required.

Language Skills:
Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.

Physical Demands:
The physical requirements for this position include frequent standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs. The role also requires speaking, hearing, and writing. Specific vision abilities required include peripheral vision.

Working Environment:
The work environment is typically loud, requiring hearing protection in all areas of the sawmill. Dust levels are moderate to high, and eye protection is mandatory. Employees may be exposed to environmental conditions such as heat, rain, cold, or snow due to outdoor work.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes, but is not limited to, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, leather footwear, and coveralls (which can be purchased through the laundry service).
