Level: Senior Scientist/Principal Scientist
Position Overview
We are seeking a Renal Disease Biology / Therapeutics Discovery Scientist to drive research and development efforts in chronic kidney disease therapeutics in cats and dogs. This role involves investigating renal disease pathophysiology, identifying novel therapeutic and biomarker targets, and developing new therapeutic strategies for kidney disorders. The ideal candidate will have expertise in renal pathophysiology, molecular mechanisms of kidney diseases, and translational drug discovery.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct mechanistic research on renal diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), and acute kidney injury (AKI).
- Design and execute in vitro and in vivo models to study renal function, injury, and repair mechanisms.
- Apply in vitro (cell-based, organoid) and in vivo (genetically modified, inducible disease models) systems for target validation and therapeutic evaluation.
- Identify and validate novel therapeutic targets using genomics, proteomics, and functional screening approaches.
- Conduct high-throughput screening (HTS) and assay development for target modulation and lead compound characterization.
- Working with other cross-functional teams, develop and assess small molecules, biologics and other novel therapies for renal disorders in cats and dogs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including medicinal chemists, protein engineers, pharmacologists, clinicians, and regulatory specialists, to advance drug development programs.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data, prepare technical reports, and contribute to regulatory submissions.
- Stay up to date with emerging research in renal pathobiology, drug discovery, and precision medicine.
Qualifications & Skills
- PhD, DVM/PhD, or equivalent in renal physiology, molecular biology, pharmacology, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Masters degree with extensive experience will also be considered.
- Strong expertise in renal cell biology, kidney disease mechanisms, and therapeutic development.
- Experience with cell-based assays, organoid models, omics technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics), and bioinformatics.
- Hands-on experience with CRISPR gene editing, RNA-based therapeutics, or high-throughput screening is a plus.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with experience in cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Preferred/Desirable Experience
- Prior experience (>2 years) in biotech, pharmaceutical R&D, or translational medicine is desirable.
- Hand on experience in fibrosis biology, inflammation, or renal regenerative medicine.
- Track record of publications and/or patents in the renal biology/therapeutics area
- Board certification in nephrology.
