What are the responsibilities and job description for the Earthwork Superintendent position at ZTEX Construction?
ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities and overall project management. We are locally owned, and we are currently looking for an Earthwork Superintendent.
The Earthworks Superintendent schedules, coordinates and supervises employees’ activities as well as sub-contractors. May involve supervising one or more trade groups (concrete finishers, equipment operators, laborers, etc.) working in a particular project. Ensures the project is running smoothly and in accordance too standards. Ensure that operations are conducted productively, to ensure profitability and sustainable growth. Responsible for the safety of his crew and equipment. Able to guide and train employees in job requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Set goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company’s plans and vision and communicate them to subordinates.
- Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks.
- Monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching.
- Receive complaints and resolve problems.
- Maintain timekeeping records accurately to reflect hours worked and submit to Payroll in a timely manner.
- Pass on information from upper management to employees.
- Prepare and submit performance evaluations.
- Hire and train new employees.
- Ensure adherence to legal and company policies and procedures and undertake disciplinary actions if the need arises.
- Ensure all on-site personnel comply with project procedures, safety programs requirements, work rules and company policies. Document all violations, notify project management and recommend/implement corrective action.
- Advise senior level supervision/project management of potential problems, interference, and schedule difficulties.
- Secure job site at all times
- Ensure employees are working in a safe manner and wearing their Personal Protective Equipment
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to understand and implement project changes.
- Ability to communicate and coordinate project requirements and changes to stakeholders.
- Through knowledge and ability to execute grading operations for mass earthwork, loading of hauling vehicles in various soil types and conditions, fine grading for roads, curbs, sidewalks, foundations, and other surfaces in a safe and productive manner.
- Ability to coordinate with project managers and foreman to schedule work, site inspections, site materials, etc.
- Overall responsibility for the safe and effective implementation of various shoring procedures and systems including trench boxes, shoring, sloping, and benching.
- Overall responsibility to meet the required quality level for all work assigned including compaction, alignment, grade, pressure testing, etc.
- Responsible for ensuring daily time and job activity reports are current and correct to include daily job costing to ensure project goals are being met.
Experience, Education & Training
- Must have 3-5 years of previous experience and knowledge with heavy civil construction projects.
- General knowledge of Topography.
- Experience on all aspects of large earth moving projects, road construction and grading.
- Basic computer skills necessary to communicate through email/internet.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements
- Able to work around moving equipment.
- Move heavy objects 50 – 90lbs.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly throughout the day.
- Follow all Safety Regulation
- Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Able to walk on rough, rocky, or uneven surfaces at construction sites.
- Must be able to work overtime to includes, shift changes, nights, and weekends, to meet the needs of the project.
Environmental Conditions:
Varies from a climate-controlled office setting to work performed outside in all types of environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.
Additional Qualifying Factors
As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening. If applicable to the contract, you may also be required to submit through a background check. Must have reliable transportation to/from work, must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
