ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities, and overall project management. We are locally owned, and we are in search of a talented, hardworking individual for the position of Payroll Clerk. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable, professional, energetic, proactive, a collaborator, willing to learn and grow with the company, and overall be a team player.
A payroll clerk is an administrative professional responsible for accurately calculating and processing employee paychecks by collecting time sheets, verifying hours worked, applying deductions, and ensuring timely payment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Daily duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Gathering employee time sheets, leave requests, and other relevant payroll data.
- Entering employee time data into payroll software.
- Processing various deductions including health insurance, retirement contributions, and garnishments.
- Creating and submitting required payroll reports to government agencies (e.g., W-2s, 1099s).
- Ensuring adherence to federal and state payroll regulations.
- Answering employee questions regarding paychecks and deductions.
- Maintaining accurate employee payroll records and files.
- Preparing and distributing accurate paystubs to employees.
- Computing gross pay, deductions (taxes, insurance, etc.), and net pay based on established guidelines.
- Checking hours worked against time sheets to ensure accuracy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy for payroll calculations.
- Ability to perform complex calculations quickly and accurately.
- Familiarity with payroll software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Advance Skills with Excel.
- Efficiently input data into payroll systems.
- Managing multiple tasks and deadlines effectively. Maintaining employee payroll information as private and confidential.

Experience & Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior experience in payroll functions, finance, accounting a plus.
- Bilingual English/Spanish required.
- Some college coursework in accounting or finance preferred.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- General Office working environment.
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
- Able to push, pull or lift 10 – 20 lbs.
- Will visit the construction yard or field locations as required.
Environmental Conditions:
- Work is performed inside office setting most of the time, may require exposure to outside environment from time to time depending on the needs of the customer or business needs.
Additional Qualifying Factors
As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening. If applicable to the contract, you may also be required to submit through a background check. You must have reliable transportation to/from work and must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
