A pecan orchard labor hand is primarily responsible for physically tending to pecan orchard, tending to the trees throughout the growing cycle, including tasks like planting, cultivating, pruning, thinning, use of farm machinery, and maintaining the overall health of the orchard, often requiring significant physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Pruning pecan trees to promote healthy growth and fruit production
- Applying necessary sprays and treatments as directed.
- Thinning branches to manage the crop load.
- Hedging trees to maintain proper shape.
- Clearing and removing debris, mowing grass, clearing the orchard floor and maintaining irrigation systems.
- Loading harvested pecans onto trucks for transport to processing facilities.
- Operating farm equipment, industrial farming tools, and tractors.
- General maintenance and upkeep of orchard property.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work long hours outdoors in hot and sometimes cold weather, with prolonged standing, bending, and lifting.
- Skillful use of tools like pruners, shears, and picking buckets.
- Identifying and selecting mature pecans while maintaining quality standards.
- Adhering to safety protocols and proper orchard management practices.
- Knowledge in general maintenance of farms or orchards.
Education, Training and Experience
- Basic experience in operating farm equipment such as tractors and mowers, etc. all.
- Basic experience/Training in all safety protocols when using farm equipment and handling chemicals.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs., stand, walk on uneven surfaces, manually manipulate, grasp, reach out and above shoulder, climb, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull.
- Vision: Frequent near acuity, depth perception, and color vision.
- Work is performed outside in all types of environmental conditions, with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to heavy traffic, noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods
Additional Qualifying Factors
As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening. If applicable to the contract, you may also be required to submit through a background check. You must have reliable transportation to/from work and must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
