The Manager of Data Science is responsible for leading as well as contributing to the daily work of the Data Science Team. Data Science works cross-functionally with project teams to develop clinical solutions for next-generation patient monitoring products : defining the need for data analyses, algorithm / model development, experiments and data collection, and reporting and producing documents in an FDA regulated industry. This role requires technical expertise in data science and analytics, life sciences, low level knowledge of ML / AI / statistical models, and ability to code in a collaborative environment. It also requires experience leading a data science team and interfacing with various stakeholders to communicate findings at multiple levels of complexity.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Accountable for Recruiting, Retention, and Development of staff.
  • Leads the assignment of team resources.
  • Identifies the best tools and technologies to help manage workflow and optimizes their implementation.
  • Anticipates bottlenecks, identifies risks, and escalates issues to upper management that cannot be internally resolved.
  • Provide strategy for product architecture and design.
  • Work with developers and project managers to determine the need for, and to define the requirements of data science-related tasks and programs for new or ongoing projects.
  • Lead, contribute to, and approve projects which may include clinical research, preliminary system design specifications, and verification and validation (V&V) testing.
  • Develop, design, review, and integrate mathematical, statistical, and ML model processes and / or products for new product or process development, or for modifications to existing products or processes.
  • Write, review, and release documentation for internal design history files, external regulatory submissions, and stakeholder requests.
  • Utilize mathematical modeling software and / or data processing programs, to guide pre-development and optimization of signal processing and waveform component derivations, processing limitations, and other tangible engineering components.
  • Manage project issues, budgets, and schedules to bring projects in on time, within budget and to ensure that outputs meet the design requirements and specifications.
  • Lead and oversee data contributions to clinical study design, statistical analysis plans (SAPs), and publications.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to review data, create verification protocols, optimize functional systems, and implement changes in line with modeling requirements.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and budgeting including forecasting staffing and resource needs.
  • Create and enforce a safe working environment for team members.
  • Lead and implement Continuous Improvement Initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities :

  • Compile reviews of research for signal characterization to guide product development for solving clinical challenges.
  • Work independently in an agile environment as well as with others within a development team.
  • Develop software solutions in line with the regulated medical device industry under a quality management system.
  • Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings as necessary.
  • Required Knowledge and Skills :

  • A background in a combination of the mathematical and biological / physiological sciences, particularly using high level mathematical tools to analyze biological / physiological systems and signals.
  • An M.S. or Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences or Engineering, Data or Mathematical Sciences, Computational Life Sciences, or similar.
  • Minimum of 8 years of data science experience or similar in the medical device industry or other regulated industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct people leadership and management experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and high level of proficiency in the English language.
  • Expert in at least three of the following languages : Python, R, SQL, Java, a C language, or MATLAB.
  • Expert in software version control via at least one of Git (preferred), Mercurial, SVN.
  • Expert in modern data science cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, google cloud, Microsoft Azure, Fabric).
  • Experience implementing processes such as : MLOps, DataOps, Data Science Lifecycle Process, etc.
  • Expertise in experimental design, data collection and exploratory data analysis / visualization.
  • Development experience in a regulated industry, such as under the FDA, with practical experience in executing code releases, design-phase transitions, and quality reviews. Experience scaling a data science team, e.g. modernizing legacy code and data storage.
  • Desired Knowledge and Skills :

  • Develops bespoke machine learning models.
  • Understanding of basic electronics and related data acquisition and management techniques.
  • Knowledge of the principles of physiology and biological signal processing / acquisition.
  • Extensive knowledge of multivariate statistical analysis including regression analysis and dimensionality reduction techniques.
  • Experience with classical machine learning techniques as well as neural network models.
  • Background in biostatistics related to statistical design of clinical studies including power analysis and basic statistical inference.
  • Experience in biology or chemistry laboratory setting.
  • Operation of lab equipment including medical analyzers.
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of the principles of photoplethysmography and its application to pulse oximetry.
  • Physical and Environmental Requirements :

  • Fast-Paced, high-volume office environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Work requires travel to meetings, site visits, and experiment sites.
  • Proficient use of office equipment including computers, copiers, fax machines and telephones.
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
  • Ability to communicate effectively via spoken, written and electronic means.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
