Lallemand is Hiring a Benchling Database Architect Near Home, KS
Main Functions The Database Architect will join Lallemand's global cross-functional Data Science team in Corporate R&D, where they will work in interdisciplinary collaborations to support Lallemand’s diverse product portfolio of yeast, fungi, and bacteria. Specifically, the Database Architect will serve as the technical owner and designer of a Benchling software product that serves as the central database for our strain culture collection and R&D results generated within the Corporate entity. You will be responsible for the active maintenance, improvement, and expansion of the Benchling platform at Lallemand through several activities:
Ongoing review and improvement of the existing Corporate R&D data model;
Consultation with groups across Lallemand about their database and data analytics needs;
Monthly coordination of the Benchling leads from different R&D sites to prioritize and execute data management and database administrative tasks;
Prompt responsiveness to internal help requests and platform troubleshooting, including redirecting users to the Benchling help desk or internal SMEs as needed, and faithful documentation of issue resolution;
Custom configuration of Benchling to capture more categories of data (in-house implementation), including expansion of the platform to use cases outside of Corporate R&D;
Needs-based mapping of potential data systems integrations with other company data sources;
Training and onboarding of new hires to Benchling, including ongoing development of training resources (documentation, workshops, video tutorials);
Management of the Benchling account relationship and keeping Lallemand users up to date about upgrades and new feature releases.
Technical skills Required
Demonstrated experience with data modeling and database administration
Fluent in SQL, including building complex queries with embedded logic, and the ability to teach introductory SQL workshops to users without prior coding knowledge
Sufficient familiarity with wet lab experiments, microbiology, and UX design principles, to act as an efficient and successful translator of scientists' data into a relational database format
Knowledge of, and adherence to, data quality, governance, and security best practices
Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics, or related fields

2 years' experience working with database software in an industry setting
Experience configuring and utilizing the Benchling platform (Notebook, Registry, Inventory, Insights, Workflows)
Formal education and/or research experience in molecular biology and strain engineering
Personal abilities Required
Excellent communicator in English, both in person and online
Excellent interpersonal skills, familiarity with change management, and a service-oriented mindset

Willingness to travel to sites in the US, Canada, and Europe for 4-5 days at a time, 2-3 times per quarter
