Crew Chief
CLAS S SUMMARY: Incumbents perform supervisory level activities in support of maintenance and operations activities and directives in assigned area of responsibility. Depending on assignment, typical duties may include: operating equipment; leading crews; supervising day-to-day operations and activities; participating in the development of unit goals, objectives, and budgets; preparing department reports; monitoring appropriate levels of inventory; resolving complex customer service complaints; overseeing regulatory compliance; and/or, performing other related activities. Supervisors oversee staff including conducting performance evaluations; coordinating training; and implementing hiring, discipline and termination procedures.
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES : (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)1.Supervises the day-to-day operations of multiple utility crews, which includes: maintaining, installing, and repairing utility systems, including water distribution and collection systems; and streets, including sidewalks and curbs; drainage systems; work may involve determining requirements for daily operational activities, and ensuring compliance with applicable policies and procedures.2.Responsible for planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating projects, processes, costs, procedures, systems, and standards; developing and coordinating work plans; inspecting in-progress and completed work to ensure conformance with established standards; assisting staff with complex activities and/or maintenance jobs; participating in the development of goals, objectives, and budgets; and, ensuring compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations, codes, and/or standards3.Maintains up to date knowledge and accurate daily records of field crew projects and performance.4.Supervises Maintenance and Operations staff and/or contractors to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; processing payroll; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; and implementing hiring, termination, and disciplinary procedures.5.Promotes and advances safety and efficiency of equipment by coordinating inspections, repairs, maintenance, and the operation of equipment and vehicles; coordinates or participates in purchasing supplies, equipment, and resources; and may obtain quotes for equipment.6.Prepares , updates, and/or processes a variety of records, files, reports, work orders, and/or other related information related to operational activities for assigned department and/or division.7.Identifies, responds to, investigates, and resolves complex issues and concerns from customers or related to safety issues; conducts follow-ups to determine customer satisfaction and service quality.8.Coordinates with internal/external departments, personnel, and agencies, and participates in a variety of meetings to receive and communicate information, and facilitate and evaluate operations and processes.9.Responsible for insuring on call schedule is properly covered and incumbent must be accessible after hours incase of emergency call out.10.Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.This job description is intended to represent only the key areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the business needs of the department.TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE : High School Diploma or GED and 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in assigned area of responsibility, including 2 years of lead or supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above..

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions, such as, mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibrations; atmospheric conditions, such as fumes, odors, gases, and poor ventilation; hazardous materials, such as chemicals, blood, and other bodily fluids; extreme temperatures; inadequate lighting; work space-related movement restrictions; intense noise; and other environmental conditions, such as, challenging behaviors, imminent danger, and threatening environments.
