Description

Public Works Department is seeking a Custodial Crew Leader to coordinate, assign, lead and follows up with the daily operation of assigned staff and custodial related tasks in a team-based environment.
Essential Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
  • Assists with overseeing and the scheduling of the daily custodial care, heavy cleaning, meeting room set up, special event support and other work order related services activities for Custodial Staff;
  • Serves as backup in the absence of the supervisor; Leads, trains, and participate in the daily operation of custodial care;
  • Coordinates and arranges the necessary resources to complete daily tasks;
  • Inspects building spaces for cleanliness and ensures custodial employees maintain acceptable work quality and productivity;
  • Supports the custodial team in accomplishing work by sharing equipment, training expertise and resources;
  • Trains and instructs subordinates in safety and the use of specialized custodial equipment, materials, techniques and procedures;
  • Ensures safety practices are followed;
  • Tracks daily time and attendance records and approves leave when needed;
  • Enter daily work requests in Lucity;
  • Maintains inventory and assists in the acquisition and distribution of cleaning supplies, materials and equipment; •Serves as a backup for payroll submission in the absence of the supervisor;
  • Addresses and documents violation of Public Works/City Policies and reports to supervisor;
  • Monitors breaks and lunchtime to keep within guidelines;
  • Prepares accident and injury reports and forwards to appropriate personnel;
  • Works with supervisor to ensure follow through on Family Medical Leave, Worker's Compensation and Light Duty Status;
  • Offers assistance, coaches and gives advice to Custodial Staff;
  • Communicates effectively and maintains cooperative relationships with customers, peers and staff;
  • Provides supervisor with employee performance feedback throughout the year;
  • Participates in professional development by attending appropriate supervisory, leadership, technical training and offers developmental opportunities to employees;
  • Assists with recruitment and selection of full time and temporary employees;
  • Assists with coordinating and overseeing moving of furniture and setup of rooms for events and programs;
  • Operates light and heavy automotive equipment such as a box truck and other vehicles;
  • Reports repair needs beyond the capabilities of custodial workers to supervisor/manager;
  • Checks daily cleaning, projects and contracts for progress and for conformance to work orders and building standards;
  • Investigates citizen and user agency complaints;
  • Responds to special requests and emergency calls from user agencies;
  • Responds to emergencies such as snow, floods, wind storms, etc., and directs others and completes a variety of emergency duties;
  • Assists in preparing snow schedule;
  • Serves as a Crew Lead in emergency responses;
  • Uses computer to perform work order entries, documenting, and email communication;
  • Runs office and council mail and train others in this function;
  • Secure/lock-up of buildings;
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects, to help with office moves and/or relocation;
  • Must be able to assemble/disassemble furniture;
  • Substitutes for custodial staff when needed;
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
  • May assist in the operational work of custodians, as needed.
  • May substitute for higher level supervisor in his or her absence.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
  • Supervisory Duties Directly leads employees in the operation custodial services.
  • Ensures that department /city policies and applicable laws are followed. Effectively handle multiple priorities, organizes workload and meets strict deadlines. Assists in recruiting and training of employees. Makes recommendations regarding performance and discipline of employees.
Minimum Education and Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED);
Three or more years of extensive experience in custodial work, some of which has been in a supervisory/leader capacity; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements

Possession of valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an acceptable driving record that meets the criteria of the City.

Relevant background checks must be completed and approved.

Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
