Position Summary:
The Archives Assistant is a full-time position, working with archives and special collections, and reporting to the University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
POSITION OBJECTIVE:
Assist the Archivist with the arrangement, description, preservation, and access to the special and archival collections of the Ross Pendergraft Library at Arkansas Tech University.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Arranging and describing special collections
Creating finding aids for archival collections
Digitizing and processing images, text, audio and video for online display
Creating and updating archival records in a content management system
Performing quality checking and proofreading
Generating digital surrogates via scanning
Creating preservation metadata for collection items
Creating derivatives of scanned items stored in the online repository
Assisting patrons with research requests and access to collections
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic library or archive procedures and practices
High degree of competency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word
Experience with photo or document digitization
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing and to read and follow instructions
Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to details
Ability to English language primary-source documents, including cursive handwriting
Experience working independently
Ability to provide detailed description of photographs and other visual materials
Ability to work carefully with fragile materials
Minimum Requirements:
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus three years of experience in a library environment or a related field OR
Completed coursework in library science, archives, museum studies, or public history.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with a Collection Management System
Experience using Adobe Photoshop
Knowledge of basic archival standards and
Experience working with archival collections
Work Location, Environment, and Physical Demands:
The Ross Pendergraft Library at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas.
SPECIAL JOB DIMENSIONS:
This position requires lifting and moving of large boxes, heavy books, and oversized collections. The environment will sometimes include mold, dust, and dead insects.
