Nr. 702: ML-based parameterizations to better simulate, understand and project subgrid-scale processes in Earth system modelsWhat to expect: The Earth System Model Evaluation and Analysis department at DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics (DLR-IPA) develops innovative methods for evaluating and analysing Earth system models with machine learning (ML) and spaceborne Earth observations to improve actionable climate science and technology assessments in aeronautics, space, transport and energy research. The evaluation of Earth system models and the reduction of long-standing systematic errors in Earth system models through ML are essential prerequisites for reliable 21st century climate projections used in climate policy guidelines.

Here we invite applications for a PhD student on ML-based parameterizations to better simulate, understand and project subgridscale processes in Earth system models. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Prof. Veronika Eyring, head of the department and Professor of Climate Modelling at the University of Bremen, and co-supervised by a leading expert in this field from the ERC Synergy Grant “Understanding and Modelling the Earth System with Machine Learning (USMILE)” or from another collaborating institution. • Master/diploma or equivalent degree in physics, mathematics, computer science or similar field with adequate educational background for a PhD thesis in physics
• Very good programming skills (preferably python)
• Experience in data analysis
• Interest in climate research and Earth system modelling
• Enthusiasm, motivation and creativity
• Fluency in English (written and spoken)
• Experience in machine learning
