The Cost Controller within the Operations Department is responsible for tracking and monitoring project costs, ensuring accurate cost and revenue recognition, and supporting Project Managers (PMs) in financial reporting and forecasting. Reporting to the Business Operations Analyst, this role plays a critical part in maintaining financial control over projects, ensuring transparency, and assisting in decision-making processes.

This position will work closely with the Finance team, Operations team, and PMs to provide insight into financial performance and support budgeting and forecasting processes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Project Cost Tracking:
  • Monitor and track project costs to ensure alignment with budgets and forecasts.
  • Identify cost variances and work with PMs to address discrepancies.
  • Ensure accurate allocation of costs to relevant projects and cost centres.
  • Maintain supplier backups for client invoicing where required.

Cost and Revenue Recognition:
  • Assist PMs in recognising costs and revenue in line with accounting standards and company policies.
  • Ensure proper accruals and provisions are recorded at month-end.
  • Support the Finance team in maintaining compliance with financial regulations.
  • Maintain data integrity and ensure consistency in financial records across systems; Trackers, Power BI for Trackers and Power BI for Sage.

Financial Reporting & Forecasting:
  • Assist Business Operations Analyst in preparation and presentation of project financial reports, including actual vs. budget analysis.
  • Provide insights and recommendations to PMs based on financial data.
  • Assist Business Operations Analyst & PMs in preparing rolling forecasts and annual budgets for projects.

Business Support & Process Improvement:
  • Collaborate with PMs to enhance financial awareness and accountability for project performance.
  • Develop and improve financial processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy in project cost tracking.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing necessary project financial data.

Project Purchasing & Buyer Duties:
  • Procure and purchase materials, equipment, and services on behalf of the Project, ensuring cost control and budget alignment.
  • Ensure accurate and timely entry of purchasing data into financial and cost-tracking systems.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of supplier cost backups.
  • Monitor supplier invoices and purchase orders for correct cost allocation and budget adherence.
  • Work closely with procurement and finance teams to resolve discrepancies in purchase orders, invoices, and payments.
  • Support negotiation of cost-effective procurement strategies while maintaining quality and project requirements.

  • Possess and apply a broad knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate technical financial issues to non-finance personnel.
  • Excellent IT skills including sound working knowledge of MS Office; particularly Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail with high level analytical skills.
  • Workload management, organising and prioritising tasks.

Experience, Competency and Qualifications

  • Professional qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CIMA (preferred, but relevant experience will also be considered).
  • Previous experience of working in a multi-currency, multi-company environment.
  • Previous experience working within Oil & Gas/Renewables industry desirable.
  • BPC System experience – SAGE 200/Power BI.
