Job Title: Geohazard Specialist

Job Location: Sunbury-on-Thames or Aberdeen (hybrid)

Contract Length: Until 31/10/2025

Role Overview:

You will be part of an integrated Site Assessment (survey acquisition) and Ground Engineering team providing site survey and developing fit-for-purpose ground models and ground-engineering for bid assessment through design, construction, and operation.


What you will do:

Provide geohazards expertise across bp’s offshore wind portfolio through the project lifecycle, including:

  • Geohazard survey and consultancy scoping and technical oversight in survey and consultancy execution
  • Ground modelling and geohazard management for permanent and temporary works

  • Ensure geohazard (seismicity, shallow gas, slope instability etc) and obstructions (challenging seafloor and seabed conditions, debris, boulders, UXO, etc) identification, assessment and mitigation, for appropriate depths of interest (e.g. cable or foundation), by avoidance or by design at windfarm sites, cable routes, landfalls and onshore facilities, during site investigation and project design and execution.
  • Work within an integrated geoscience team to build fit-for-purpose ground models for wind farm engineering.
  • Quantify and present ground engineering risks to relevant customers to ensure they are understood, controlled and continuously reduced across the business.
  • Collaborate with safety, consent and procurement teams to ensure robust execution of works.
  • Collaborate with associated foundation, and transmission engineering, and construction disciplines to safely deliver site investigations and project infrastructure.
  • Ensure safe and cost-efficient design and integrity management throughout asset life in accordance with bp and industry technical practices and standards.
  • Maintain relationships with third party suppliers, contractors, and other partners.
  • Actively contribute to technology development and to the wider geohazards and geophysics communities of practice to share knowledge and findings.


What you will have:

  • Geoscience, or Geo-Engineering degree.
  • Appropriate professional accreditation.
  • Excellent knowledge of industry codes and standards.
  • Project management expertise of site investigation and ground engineering activities.
  • Expertise in planning and implementation of site investigations, characterisation and coordinated ground model development.
  • Expertise in geophysical survey of the seafloor and seabed over the depth of interest, including data acquisition, processing, interpretation.
  • Expertise in assimilation and integration of data with geological and geotechnical (probes, logs, tests) information, and development of ground models.
  • Expertise in identification, assessment and management of geohazard and ground risks.
  • Knowledge of Offshore Wind ground engineering activities related to design, analysis and installation for offshore wind infrastructure e.g. turbine and substation foundation, and associated transmission system (off- and on-shore).
  • Excellent proficiency in English (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills both oral and written.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, working with distributed teams and time-zones.
  • Proven expertise of working in multi-disciplinary teams and major projects with minimal technical supervision.
  • Strong, proven Stakeholder management, and collaboration. Comfortable reporting up to senior management.


Desirable:

  • Masters/ PhD in relevant discipline.
  • Membership of relevant industry panels or standards organizations (e.g. SUT, OGP, ISO etc).
  • Fundamental understanding of soil and rock (geo)physics.
  • Experience with using geohazard software (e.g. IHS kingdom, Petrel).
  • Experience of i) advanced cone penetration test interpretation, ii) down-hole geophysical logging interpretation.
  • Awareness of i) machine-learning geo-data integration, ii) structural aspects of foundation design iii) transmission-system design and iv) Energy Yield and metocean assessment.
  • Coding/ scripting expertise (e.g. Matlab, python).
  • Experience working remotely.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring more junior team members.
